solo1874 Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 Hi, I want to change disks and pads on my 2004 1.9 Diesel M/S desire. I've had a look and it's vented disks and I belive the calipers are Bosch. I have the Haynes manual and the only stumbling block I see is the two bolts that hold the calipers to the swivel hub. The manual just says remove them but as I will have to buy the correct size socket does anyone know what size it is? It seems to be a Torx type, internal rather than external fitting, it may be allen key but as its done up quite tight I want the right tool for the right fit. Thanks in advance John ;) Quote
techbod Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 I bought a kit from halfords and lasted me 15 years and covered the star drive sachets or hex keys as they are called its on sale at the moment for £99 and covers full replacement warranty for life ( even snap on dont do that ) they test the tool to make sure you complied with its use, halfords just give you a new one free Quote

solo1874 Posted August 3, 2008 Author Posted August 3, 2008 Thanks for that, there lies my problem, now hex bits are the allen key bits I believe whilst Tork are the Star bits. For the sake of changing a set of disks I don't really want to spend £99 whether on offer or not for a one off job. Hence my enquiry if anyone knew the size, I can buy a kit whilst not guarranteed for life for £15 to do just this one job. But I would like to be sure I am actually buying the size I need hence the question. I don't need a kit for life, well I don't have that much left in me ;) so If I get no further answrs then I'll go for the £15 kit or just take it to a garage. Last time a set of disks and pads from main Dealers was £200, or £120 from local garage. I paid the dealer because of the warranty and so soon after they are gone again. Call me cynical but my Micra never had pads or shoes in 80,000 miles. These berlingos (whilst I love mine) are very expensive to maintain and do require a lot of parts all the time. Perhaps its my age but £250 for a little service (£80 an hour) is a bit of a shoch after my Micra. Oh well, I do appreciate your reply so thank you, was just wondering the T size I needed. Happy motoring, off to the S of France in mine soon so getting it all up together. Regards John Quote
solo1874 Posted August 4, 2008 Author Posted August 4, 2008 Just as an update, I've ordered disks and pads, new bolts etc and a set of Tork sockets so I'll let you know. I'm also changing the anti-roll bar stabiliser links at the same time as they are starting to knock. I'm always amazed the Citroen dealer I go to never mentions them, they frive me mad! Cheers John Quote

Cheers John Hi Guys Well a bit of sunshine today Sunday, stabiliser links driving me mad and I set to work. All the parts arrived ok and cost including the Torx sockets, stabiliser links and discs/pads (Mintex) etc came to £75. It was £200 two years ago for discs and pads at the main dealer and so was a minor service. The minor service of two weeks ago was £250 so I was expecting the same for discs and pads this time hence the reason for DIY. Now I'm almost 56 and not the fittest but had wrapped it all up in 2 hours. The torx socket that is required to undo the Bosch calipers is a T55 (my original posting) and also the two torx screws that hold the disk to the hub are T30. That was the only special tools needed the rest being achieved by normal Metric sockets. A couple of extra items that may not be in your tool box are Copper Grease (copper slip its sometimes called), this can be applied to the anti-squel locating shims that retain the disc pads, caliper piston external edge, its a non-grease lubriacant. Loctite is needed on the T55 torx bolts to ensure they don't vibrate loose as they don't use lock washers and also on the lower bolt on the caliper that removal allows the replacement of the pads. This bolt MUST be replaced for new each time it is removed with loctite. A gentle local drive round (to Tesco) and all is well and that god awfull rattling from the stabiliser links is gone! Thats it, france in 5 weeks for three weeks then chop the Berlingo in for something else. Anyone want any info on the parts I used etc feel free to ask, you can always post here and I'll reply. CheersJohn Quote

Guest Ayup Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 Just wanted to say thanks for the useful info on the size of the Torx screw on the discs (T55). It cost me 27 Euros to buy a set that covered the size but it should be worth it in the long run Cheers, Rob (ps - 55 years old and did the job in 90mins ..... + about a week of pratting about, or preparation as I like to call it) Quote
