Seen a few Xantias on petrol and diesel. I've currently got a Xantia diesel on about 140,000 and looking to get a "new" Xantia. The petrols are a lot cheaper than the diesels on the same mileage - sometimes half the price. What are the disadvantages and advantages of petrol v diesel these days. I always thought diesels ran forever. What's the top end mileage for a petrol? What mpg do the petrols achieve? Does anyone know a site with Xantias mpg listed?

I have the 1.8 16v 2000 xantia and get 30+mpg urban and 45+mpg on a run but it depends on how hard the foot is and the diesel fare slightly better but the cost of diesel blows that away and the repairs cost much more on the diesel ( you can guess from that I don't like diesels ) personal choice of course ;) because there are many who like them

It depends greatly on your driving style and expectations. The later HDi diesels provide a very relaxed driving experience with excellent flexibility and refinement coupled to 50+ mpg on a run. I will agree with techbod that the diesel advantage has been blurred by the current price advantage that petrol now has. However, the oil market is volatile and that advantage may just as easily disappear again.

Regarding MPG and running costs the best website is Parkers and the page for the Xantia is found here. http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Summar...=129&page=3

In my opinion, the best Xantia is the 110 HDi. It has bags of performance (it's fitted with the same brakes as the 3.0 V6 and 2.0 petrol turbo) and is quiet and refined and will return 45 mpg plus if driven with reasonable restraint. The 1.8 and 2.0 petrols are gutless unless revved hard and will struggle to return 35 mpg in similar driving. The only problem with the 110 HDi is that it is in group 13 insurance. The 90 is group 9! CHECK WITH YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY BEFORE YOU TAKE THE PLUNGE.

Regarding mileage expectations, My sons '96 1.4i ZX has now 116000 miles up, returns 40+ mpg and runs like a clock! Any petrol or diesel engine will acheive high mileage if properly maintaned, although diesels seem to withstand neglect a bit better.

Cheers. Hope this helps ;)

I've got a 2.1TD

I ran a 2.1 Xantia from 1998 till 2005 and it was a brilliant car. Over the month, from fill to fill, it's average fuel consumption was usually 42mpg. As a tow car, it was a work horse and with the caravan on the back, it towed effortlessly at 70mph and returned 32mpg. My present C5 also tows very well, but any increase in speed over 60, and the fuel consumption plumets.

I've still got my service record for the 2.1 on floppy and up till I sold it on at 100000 miles, other than regular oil and filter changes, all it cost me was 3 hydraulic fluid changes, 2 cambelts, and 3 rear spheres. The only breakdown required a new antisink valve.

I've got to disagree with Colin - IMO the best Xantia is the 2.1
