1.4 Furio Misfire

My wife's Furio (54 plate, 18000miles) with Sensodrive suddenly lost power and would not change up above 2nd gear. It starts OK but runs rough as if one of the spark plugs is fouled. There are no engine warning lights but the gearbox AUTO sign and the snowflake just above it are flashing.

It is bank holiday weekend and nobody is open until Tuesday. Whilst I wait for the dealer to open is there anything I could check? The gearbox seems to select 1,2 and reverse OK. I've checked the plugs and they seem nice straw colour. There is no corona after dark! The injectors all measure 12.6 ohms and wiring looks good.

We were very pleased with this car until I read about the double whammy of owning an automatic Citroen. Please tell me this is not a gearbox problem! ;)

some one posted on this one before and basically the tranny has gone into limp mode so needs resetting but someone will be along to assist you there, car is too new for me because the tyranny is like tiptronic and im not into that

Thanks techbod. So you think that the gearbox just needs a reset. But what about the misfire? My bet is on the HT coil assembly but why no warning light? Could it be the head gasket or a valve on a car so young?

missfire / stumble it would leave a fault code like P0300 multiple misfire detected or P0301 cylinder one misfire if it didn't leave any of these code its a one off and bogus, someone mentioned ho to reset the tyranny but cant find the post it was something to do with holding the peddle down and switching the ignition on but not cranking the engine

I don't have access to a diagnostic tester but the misfire is not bogus - there's no power! When I try to move off the engine stalls. The gearbox reset procedure is in the owner's manual - switch on, press brake pedal, wait 30secs, release brake. However, the gearbox seems to work fine with the ignition off - it goes from auto to 1 and 2. No flashing, just normal. When I turn the ignition to ON it starts flashing the snowflake and AUTO after a few seconds.

I'm guessing the fault is in the engine. Is there any way of testing the HT pack? Or can you recommend a diagnostic tester. I could throw in the towel and hand it to a dealer but this would be a first in over forty years of motoring!

sounds like a coil pack to me, and the reduction in power due to misfire wont allow the gearbox to change up... ive changed a good few coil packs on psa engines due to misfire, very quick and easy job to do. try swapping it from a mates pug/cit and see how it goes first at least to rule it in or out.

If the snowflake is flashing you can be fairly confident that the gearbox computer has registered a fault. Because of this and the fact the engine ECU is linked to the gearbox ECU its likely that it will have reduced the power output of the engine electronically to stop you causing damage by driving it.

With regards to the suggestion about the coil pack.....if it has failed it wouldnt cause the snowflake to flash.

Unfortunately it seems you will be finding a dealer to check it out on the diagnostic equipment.

Lets hope the Computer Finds a fault as for over 2 and half years now they still haven't found a fault with my brothers C3 SensoDrive. His car is terrible to drive bloody hard work the gearbox tends not to selects gears at anytime without warning, I tend not to use it if I don't have too. Now My last C3 SensoDrives was great and so has this C2 so far.

Thanks rorydoyle. I thought so too. So I took off the coil pack and the plugs and got someone to crank the engine whilst I held the plugs against the manifold. Big fat sparks from all the plugs. So not that then!

My local mobile mechanic should be over the bank holiday rush in a day or two and should be able to plug in his tester. In the mean time I going to see if I can get the injectors to squirt. It's looking more and more like a head gasket though! I thought those days were long gone.

I'll keep you posted.

Hi there,

Might I suggest that you take note of KFK's 'words of wisdom' before you go any further - it will probably save you money in the long run.

Thanks smokescreen but my local garage collected the car, diagnosed a faulty coil pack and had it fixed for less than the main dealer would probably have charged just to collect. Well done Coach House Garage, High Lane!

Thanks to everyone who offered advice.

common misfire problem on this engine without eml light is injector no1 cambelt side they take in water and go opencircuit when replacing replace the washer jets also as these are the cause of the water ingress
