Hi folks

I was wondering if some body may be able to help please. I have a four year old C8 with 43000 miles on the clock. Lately the fault "Antipollution Fault" keeps appearing on the dash display. Took it to the garage who put their computer on it and said the fault code meant nothing so they cleared the error.

However about two days later the fault returned again and to cut a long story short the garge ran a thorough diagnostic check and said the particulate filter is faulty and will cost £700 to fix. Has anybody encountered the same problem? and is it as expensive as this to repair? The C8 does not seem to be suffering any loss of performance and the fault tends to come and go but has been on constant the past couple of days.

Thanks in advance

the filter cant go wrong with low miles like that its designed to be reset and cleaned by Citroen on diagnostic tool at 56k, take a drive on the motorway and keep to 70mph for 1/4 mile that should clean it and turn the light off ( keep it at 70mph and don't excelerate or drop your speed ) otherwise you will loose the set up

this is a how to change it when you need to

N.B. : Replacing the particle filter does not require the prior removal of the catalytic converter/particle filter assembly .

URGENT : Observe the specifications described in the technical documentation .

1. Container size

URGENT : Do not throw away the packaging of the particle filter provided by Replacement Parts .

URGENT : Use this packaging to return the replaced component .

Figure : b1jk062d

Figure : b1jk062d

Apply the plugs and cover from the new particle filter to the ends and aperture (A) of the pressure take-off .

Place the particle filter in the saved bag .

Place the used particle filter in the original packaging .

Return the component to the reconditioning centre .

2. Removing

Figure : b1jk063d

Figure : b1jk063d

Remove the rear collar (1) .

Uncouple the rear pressure take-off pipe (2) at the collar .

Remove the 4 nuts (3) .

Disconnect the particle filter from the catalytic converter .

Figure : b1jk064d

Figure : b1jk064d

Remove the seal (4) .

Save the rear pressure take-off union (2) from the removed particle filter .

3. Refitting

URGENT : Clean the contact faces of the seal, systematically replace the collar (1) and the seal (4) .

CAUTION : When refitting the seal (4), check the positioning of the particle filter in relation to the catalytic converter, by aligning the pressure take-off pipes .

Figure : b1jk065d

Figure : b1jk065d

Place the bolts and nuts (3) without tightening them .

Align the brackets of the particle filter and the catalytic converter .

Couple the rear pressure take-off pipe (2) .

Tighten :

* The screws (3) (in the order indicated from 1 to 4) to 3,3 ± 0,5 m.daN

* The connector (2) using a pipe spanner : tighten to 1,7 ± 0,1 m.daN

* Clamping collar (1) : tighten to 2,5 ± 0,4 m.daN

N.B. : Fill the additive reservoir (see the relevant operation) .

Thanks techbod. Heading on a motorway journey in a couple weeks so do I just keep it to 70 mph for a quarter of any mile or as soon I hit the motorway?

that's it mate it does the clean out all by its self and you should see some black soot from the rear ( not like the older cars when all you did was boot it ) these systems Are fully computer controlled sad it is

Well Techbod

Just back from the motorway journey and the light was off on the way down but low and behold raised its ugly head all the way home yesterday. Tried the 70 mpt setup but didn't seem to do anything.

Am I looking at replacing this filter or am I missing something. There is no drop in engine performance its just an annoying light thats coming nad going. :(

its needs cleaning out rather than changing the garage has the diagnostics to do that and reset the ECU but you could clean it out with a jet washer after you take it out then dry it out before its put back in I think they are £25 new but it still needs to be reset and plenty of guys on the site have the tools for that depending on where you are like coastline taxi in sunderland

you could pm him.

plenty of links here to show you what to do,

Thanks techbod

I'm in Galashiels in the Scottish borders know of anybody in this area? Does it have to be a citroen garage or is it within the remit of any garage?

if a garage had lexia 3 it would be able to do it but doesn't have to be a Citroen dealer perhaps someone will see this post and contact you :) you could also ask the dealer to just clean it out for you and not to fit a new filter as they only clean them anyways as part of a service at 50k so shouldn't cost much to do that,

personally after reading that review on the FAP filter I would just remove it completely because all it does is restrict the exhaust flow when it gets blocked so without it in there it should run better

Thanks techbod

so technically removing it wouldn't do any harm to the engine? Is it easily accessible this filter or is it an up on the ramp job?

thanks again

You're a brave fellow if you do remove it. Goodness knows what the engine will do then. The sensors connected before and aft of the filter tells the computer controlling the engine management what to do. If you ignore the warnings displayed on the panel, eventually the engine management will ensure that the engine won't rev. You'll be able to creep along at a few miles per hour.

What's the level in the eolys tank? Have you had the car from new - do you know for sure that the mileage is correct? Certainly the warnings shouldn't appear at 40000 miles.

all the sensors do is measure the millage and the density of the FAP and other sensors like the o2 sensors wont throw codes because its not the same as if you did a decat the sensors have to be left in,

the FAP filter has no electrical connections and not linked to any ECU and the light on the dash is a pollution warning and the FAP is getting blocked so if its not there it cant get blocked remember the early diesels don't have it so personally I don't see how it would make any difference if it wasn't there apart from the pollution factor which is in doubt that it works effectively and causes more noxious gasses than a standard diesel that's why Peugeot has put it on hold till the gov delve into its issues.

I have been looking into the FAP system for a while now so I know a little about how it works :)

I disagree - the sensors do more than "measure mileage". There are two which measure temperature and another two which measure pressure - both before and after the particle filter. So if there's a method of getting the two pressure sensors to fool the management system into thinking that the particle filter is there, then by all means Scouser should take your advice and dump his filter. When he's done it I hope he comes back and tells us how his car is running.

Thanks guys,

I'm completely non-mechanical so I think I'll see how things pan out at the gararge. I bought the car at the start of the year second hand and the vehicle checked out legit for mileage. Out of interest where do I find the eolys tank?

eloys tank is in the front inner wheel arch passenger side im told ( never worked on one yet ) :)

FAP filter the other one is for the exhaust so here is the proper image

annoying indeed I hate all this new tech thats useless to start with and a cash earner for the dealers ;) I would remove the bulb so it stops annoying you as the cars runs ok its obviously a bogus fault then rip the damned filter out cough :)
