I'm hoping someone out there has the same Berlingo as me, or others are experiancing the same symptoms as I am. My motor is the 2008 1.6 HDI 92Desire. Now sometimes when I'm in, say, top gear & release the accelerator when doing app 35ish, as the speed drops & just as the engine starts to labour (still in top) the engine picks up & the car simply keeps going. My foot is nowhere near the gas pedal, but it is without doubt still maintaining around 28/30mph, I can feel it driving & definitely not on over-run. The pedal is not sticking, because if I then dip the clutch, the revs ease down from just over 1000rpm to app 950/1000rpm. Whereas if the pedal was sticking the revs would rise. I've also noticed this in 4th gear in the same scenario. My dealer at first said that they are all like that???? But when I insisted that I'd been in the trade myself as a mechanic & never come across anything like it, he booked it in to be checked out & found nothing. I think there is something amiss, because my mpg is crap as I've indicated elsewhere on this forum. If I get in touch with Citroen Technical, they'll simply refer me to my dealer. Anyone shed any light on this phenomenon?

Cheers

does it have cruise control? I know some of the newer cars can be programmed to certain speeds so if you have it ensure its turned off or reset it, I also don't think its right it should be coasting at that speed so without doubt something isn't right

Thanks for your reply. No, it doesn't have cruise control, but on further enquiries it seems the engine ECU is cutting in at that speed (as it slows down in that gear) to maintain engine tickover.

I don't usually drive like that, it just that the first time it occured, I had to replicate it, to see if it did it again, which it did & now I know why.

Thanks again.

35mph in top gear.....what rpm? about 1000rpm maybe?

My guess would be that the the load on the engine together with low engine rpm is causing the engine management system to 'maintain engine idle speed' the alternative would be to allow it to stall.....after all if you dont have your foot on the throttle that is what you would expect ultimately to happen.

The answer to the problem would be to drive in the correct gear.....35 in top isnt the correct gear!.....and by driving in the correct gear you will find your fuel economy improves, the driveability of the vehicle improves and the engine braking will improve.....i would hazzard a guess that 25 - 35 in 3rd, 35 - 45 in 4th and 45+ in 5th should give you much better drivability.

Incidently, your not on your own with identifying this....i know of several C3 owners that have experienced it and from a personal note can make it happen on all of them regardless of the owner complaining of it.......it isnt a fault, its a characteristic that becomes apparent due to driving style.

My first post on here, hi and a Happy New Year one and all!.

This seems to be a characteristic of modern diesels, my Berlingo 2.0HDi will do this in any gear, e.g. when stationary and in first gear, if you lift the clutch slowly it will pull away at a steady crawl, without touching the accelerator.

My wife's previous Mini One D with the Toyota Yaris engine and six speed gearbox would do the same and it was possible to gradually drive it all the way up to about 30mph by using the gears sequentially and no accelerator. It would also never stall on a hill regardless of throttle position as long as you lifted the clutch gently.

As pointed out driving around at these very low rpm does not do much for fuel economy and I am guessing it is not that good from the point of view of clean running etc..
