c5v62001 Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Hi -- Last week my speedometer stopped working. I asked a shop in town how it would be to fix it. I got quoted €500 (I'm in Sweden). I am curious, has anyone in this forum successfully removed and re-installed the instrument cluster on a C5? I want to have a look at the pin I believe is broke inside the speedometer, but in order to do that, I need to remove the cluster. Had it cost €200 to fix it, without having to replace the instrument panel I would have been more than happy. --- Found somebody who fixed the problem on his C5 ---Managed to find a car enthusiast who lives 20 minutes from me, will contact him and either have him help me, or pay him to fix it for me. It's a small world. -- Update #1, Speedo works again -- Yesterday I removed the instrument cluster and swapped the rev counter motor and the speedo motor and put it all back after calibrating the speedo. The guy who provided me with the description was really nice and has offered to fix the failed motor for me so I can have both rev counter at speedo working at the same time. Decided to give it a go myself, since I finally figured out how it needed to be done. I believe the motors look different on the 2001 and 2002 models, the one I have is simpler in its design. --- Picture of the stepper motor with the metal pin I put in to hold the gear wheel (far left) --- The speedo and rev meter now both work. http://www.ringen.net/~mlu/citroen/steppermotor.jpg Quote
kfk Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Along the bottom of the instrument panel clear glass you will see two moulding marks in the plastic....slide something thin and flat (credit card) between the instrument panel and the dashboard. gently pull on the trip control knob and the instrument panel will pull forward.....unclip the electrical connector and slide the instrument panel out from behind the steering wheel........if it takes you longer than ten minutes your doing something wrong. c5v62001 Posted November 4, 2008 Author Posted November 4, 2008 Thanks a bunch, I will give it a try this weekend! Just getting it out and have a good look at it would be a big step forward in resolving the problem. The problem I think I have is either a plastic gear that the teeth broke on, or a pin that I have read C5 owners replacing. With some luck, it just came out of alignment, otherwise I may invest in a old cluster and use parts from it. Just feel like replacing the whole cluster when a plastic part is broken is like getting a new car when the ash tray is full... The one of the rev counter will swop over and put the speedo back on. just dont bend the 2 white clips that hold the motor on or youl shag it and have to get a new cluster just gently open the clips on the motor and pull it of. to put back on just gently push ito place after youve lined the 5 pins up Quote
c5v62001 Posted November 5, 2008 Author Posted November 5, 2008 I won't know for sure until I pull the cluster out and look. I hear the stepper motor when it tries to return the needle back to zero when I slow down. Since the needle is already below zero I hear clicking from the (what I believe) is a broken gear/pin (plastic details). If the motor is out, I will try the rev motor. Thanks for the tip. Just out of interest, why are you being quoted euro in Sweden? Swedish currency is the cown (SEK)500 SEK is about £100... Quote
c5v62001 Posted November 5, 2008 Author Posted November 5, 2008 The quote was in SEK, 5000 SEK is roughly €500, I used € since I figured it would be easier to figure out than the rather unknown SEK. (500 SEK is £40) Just out of interest, why are you being quoted euro in Sweden? Swedish currency is the cown (SEK)500 SEK is about £100... Quote
