Guest gs fan Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Has anyone had a loud tick / rattle most noticeable at the drivers side around the wheel arch.Jacked the car up today to see if I could pin-point the source , thought it might be a loose heat shield or something simple , but nothing is slack and when I'm under the car near the sump I'm sure that's where it's coming from . I thought it might be the oil pump ?? Gratefull for any advice as ever ... Quote

Johndouglas Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 What is the damp crank pulley ?? The pulley on your car is made from two rings of steel bonded together with rubber. Over time the rubber begins to deteriorate and eventually the pulley will collapse with dire results. It shows itself with a tinkling/rattle noise. Quote

You can take a look with the engine ticking over when warm, just keep your fingers/clothes/hair out of the way. Look down the end of engine when idling, at the bottom (crank) pulley. A slight amount of movement is acceptable, as that is what the pulley has the rubber damper for, but if it is the cause of your noise, you will see it wobbling all over the place. I noticed mine is looking perished when i did the timing belt, not sure how much they are at a dealer, but there is someone on ebay knocking them out for £99. Quote

I reckon it's the damped pulley that's getting noisy , but was not aware of this fault till reading all those contributions by guys who had experienced this before.I went into "search" and there are some pretty scary stories relating to the failure of this pulley, so I've got the car booked into the dealer for tuesday. As for price ...seems the pulley costs around 157 + VAT from citroen , GSF have them for 87+ VAT .One guy in the "Search" area says you get what you pay for , he did not have a good experience with the cheaper pulleys either in the fitting of them or the length of time they lasted .
