A well known handbrake failure in ZXs is caused by the handbrake cables being damaged by stone chips off the roads peircing the outer plastic sheath and causing the cable outer steel spiral to collapse due to localised corrossion. (Rust) This can be seen quite easily if the cable is "Scrunched up" in the centre section of its run adjacent to the rear wheel. The only cure is to replace the affected cable. What I did to protect the cable from stone chip attack was to cover the outer skin with a split garden hose secured by cable ties to stop stone damage. Been OK since.

Cheers. hope this is of help.
