Any clues please I have just bought it private and did not test the manual side of box. Got it faily cheap though..

Put the lever to manual side just carries on in Auto no manual dash lights.

Auto side works OK a bit of a whine when accelerating in 1&2

Is there no Tech guy on this forum??? was rather hoping to get a clue as to what was wrong here.

If you do a Search you will find that there have already been posts made about problems with auto boxes. I think that Coastline has made some very useful posts in the past.

I know almost nothing about the C5 auto box but the first things I would check are:

ATF levels in the box?

Is the paddle hitting the right (micro) switch when operated and is the switch still working?

Have you bought a manual? Haynes, perhaps?

Have you checked for any loose wires or multi pin connectors on the gearbox?

Yes I have a Haynes arrived last week, I have searched everything I can find here, and else where for a clue. I was rather hoping not to launch blindly into it, just my luck to get a fault no one else has had! . The Box operates OK just no manual side. Put it there it just carries on in auto mode with no change to the dash indicators.

Do you know if the switches are at the base of the lever or does the lever opperate other controls remotely?

Ok firstly what type of auto box is it. the fault you are describeing is on the tiptronic side and will most probally be a electronic issue (thats assuming the box works fine when you have it in normal auto mode) and could be anything eg fuse, broken wire, ecu fault etc etc. In any event the auto box has its own ecu so youl have to get a diagnostic done on it before you can go any further. If it was mine id be phoning the previous owner up and ask him/her if there was any faults with the box. Just a daft one but have you checked all the connections to the box and the ecu also is the speedo and reversing lights working

Thanks for your reply...

The previous owner seem's to have been meticulas It has a full Ctreon history, the last Service and MOT 1st of June at Citreon. I have all the past repair bills. I feel the owner I bought it off never used the manual side. Only gearbox related item was a gearbox oil change at 3rd cervice no reason stated. Its a 2001 50000 mls. 4 speed box.

Can you tell me where the Gearbox ECU is and how to get the auto gear shift handle off? I have examind it, does it unscrew or pulloff? Speedo works, reverse light OK. Only fault? I can find is occaisional electronic Buzz from behind the dash board at random intervals.

The ECU is in the engine compartment behind the battery and has two connectors with a total of 56 pins, looks like 2x28 pin connectors.

Looks to me like the whole box is controlled by just the one cable from the shift handle.

Seems to control two input selectors on the box itself.

I would check the cable at both ends for any sign of looseness, and also make sure nothing has been dropped on top of the box (like a small nut, or bit of wood, or stone) that's interfering with any of the controls for the box.

Hi meant what type of box is in the car is it a AL 4 or a 4 hp 20 type of box. Firstly phone the citroen dealer up on the service book and ask them if they had reason to check the box as the oil change in the box isnt due till 80k and there not monsters they will help you. Does the car jerk when going from park to reverse or neutral to reverse and neutral to drive, if memory serves me right im almost sure that when there is a fault on the auto box it goes into back up mode and switches the tip tronic side of the box off. Like randombloke say the ecu is just up from the battery under a big black plastic cover held on by 4 x plastic clips once inside youle see a fuse box and the ecu,s yours will have 2 and the top one is for the auto box. Also to remove the gear knob its a pig but it does just pull up of the lever and the panel then just clips of but all youl find under there is the shift lock which is working on yours or you wouldnt get the car out of park and the electronic sensor for the manual side and is controlled by magnets on the bottom of the gear lever so be very careful what your poking at in that area. You really really need to get a diagnostic done on the box before you can move any further forward

Right thanks for that.....

I will try to find out what kind of box it is...will there be a number stamped somewhere or will I have to do an enquiry on the chassis number? I have always had auto cars and the operation of the box is totaly normal no jerks or other wierdness..

I asumed the manual side would have been controled by micro switches I thought they would have been by the shift lever, magnetic reed switches by the sound of it. A bit more difficult to diagnose. Its got another 10000mls to next service maybe I will leave it till then, I think they do a diagnostic as part of that and see what comes. i might have stopped worrying about it by then and leave it as is.

Thanks for help

Sorry but a diagnostic isnt part of your service and will be charged for. The longer you leave it the worse you could be making and end up having to replace the whole box

Right I have got an Autel code reader and it reports no codes. I asume there is a master switch that changes it form Automatic to Manual control. Do you think its under the handle or on the gear box?. Haynes is unhelpful. I have tried removing the gear handdle its very tight anymore effort may damage it.

Solved

Dry joint on wires soldered to circuit board

Got round to taking the gear change leaver apart.

Leaver surounding bezel off. Then there are there are 2 plastic layers clipped on over the top of the gear lever proper. Try to unclip them as the clips are a bit light weight and fragile. Remove the 4 screws that hold the gate on.

It is operated by a small magnet on the side of the gear leaver that affects 3 swithes on a small circuit board. Each time I removed and refitted the board, it fits in a slot, it would work OK for a while.

As no other fault apparent I resoldered the wires to the board. Now OK.
