Mike7777777 Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Hi First post etc. I've had a couple of petrol Mondeos, buy at 40k miles, throw away at 140k miles. No real problems (except the mundanity of it all), now driving approx 30k miles per annum so the 37ish mpg could be improved upon and I'm sick of visiting petrol stations. I've looked at and tested a couple of TDCi Mondeos, including a 2.2 155 bhp that was surprising, and in all honesty I'd buy one tomorrow except for the horrendous accounts of TDCi dual mass flywheels, EGRs and expensive misfueling. I had a Xantia 2.0 HDi 110 hatchback 1999 to 2002, brand new to 100k miles, no real problems except for one of the fuel pumps failing at 95k miles. So, I like Citroen suspension and diesel engines, but are there any real show stoppers? I intend to buy a 2005 car with 40k - 50k miles, run it for another 100k miles and throw it away. Comments please! Quote

Comments please! If you can find one, I would go for the 2.0 in 138 bhp guise (DW10BTED), in the highest spec affordable. Be wary of problems with the DPF/FAP and the top ups for it, cam belts close to 100k miles and front wheel wobble. I'd also be wary of "budget" tyres on the front wheels. Sun roofs can be problematic, check it, as can central locking, make sure all four doors and boot lock and unlock, and if an estate make sure the glass opens separately from the boot. 2.2 can be thirsty, auto box very much so. A few problems with dual mass flywheels, but not a lot. Rear brakes rust at the calliper to swing arm joint IIRC. Height correctors/sensors occasionally stick. Worth also checking that the climate control/air con works and is cold when cold and hot when hot as there have been reports of flaps getting stuck or the motors that drive them stripping cogs. Quote
Mike7777777 Posted July 27, 2009 Author Posted July 27, 2009 Thanks Random ">Be wary of problems with the DPF/FAP and the top ups for it,<" This must be the exhaust particle filter burning thing. Any links available? 90% of my mileage is motorway/dual carriageway, does that mean fewer burning sessions? I've found a couple of 2005 2.0 VTRs at £5k from dealers (I want some sort of warranty) not seen them yet. What mpg can I expect at a steady 75 - 80mph with a manual box? Quote
coastline taxis Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Been running c5 for years now and there good work horses althought i cant realy comment on motorway miles but the drivers who rent them have never complained about the fuel. The problems that these cars arnt that bad and i personaly think that a lot of the problems are due to the cars not getting used enough so you should be ok on that front. I would stay away from the 2.2 but thats just my choice. But no matter what you get your going to eventualy pay for a fap filter Quote

Not sure, but FAP problems IIRC were worst with cars driven round town that did not get warm or have the engine used in anger. There were a couple of MPG threads, sorry but you'll have to sue the search function. IIRC 45 to 50 with a 6 speed box? Maybe low 50s? Quote
Mike7777777 Posted July 28, 2009 Author Posted July 28, 2009 Thanks for the replies, do you know what a budget cost for a replacement FAP filter is? Quote

iannez Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 last time i checked the price's were around £300 for particle filter, £130 for ecu and £75 for eloys additive + vat. then a couple of hours labour. you can get an aftermarket filter for around £200. Quote

Ok, thanks, that's a lot cheaper than a Mondeo DMF Quote
