hi all

anyone got any ideas as to why my 2003,2.0hdi rhz engine c5 has such poor fuel comsumption?

the trip computer is telling me 34.5mpg on a average week, as its a diesel i would expect alot more.

i have changed the oil & filter, the air & fuel filter, but no difference.

any ideas much appreciated.

thanks

Firstly, your trip computer may not be too accurate. Check the figure by doing a brim to brim test.

If you do a lot of intermediate gear driving 34.5 isn't bad.

My C5 does about the same around town but put it on the motorway and the mpg easily goes up to 46mpg. If I'm content to keep just below 2000revs it'll go into the 50's.

Maybe others won't agree - but I'm convinced I get a poorer figure if I use Tesco fuel.

My C5 suffers the worst fuel consumption when it's got a bit of brake drag. Check the front callipers do not have any or very little drag. If there is any drag then clean the areas where the brake pads make contact with the calliper and use a small amount of copper grease to prevent it re-occurring.

Make sure the tyres are properly inflated, This is another area where I've suffered poor fuel consumption. Even 0.1 to 0.2 bar makes a difference. Use your own digital guage, as some garages are miles out.
