Had to top up the oil on my 9 yr old Relay 2.5D non turbo and left the cap off for about 25 miles. Smelt oil burning, stopped and checked engine compartment, everthing covered in oil. Put cap on checked oil level, was still ok. So coninued home for another 70 miles. Noticed next day the exhaust pipe was heavily sooted and didn't clear after a run. Wasn't like this before. Any ideas? Seems to run normally, mileage is only 60k. Have now degreased and pressure washed engine bay. Thanks in advance

ok when youve left the cap off the engine has efectivley run with none or very little oil in it. So start by giving it a full engine service including the air filter and check the breather system and possibly a engine flush and it should be ok as the 2.5 is virtually bombproof engine

Thanks coastline. I've done what you said and it seems to run cleaner. One other thing I have just noticed. On the radiator there are two electric cooling fans set diagonally. Do they work independently? When the fan kicked in only the higher of the two started and although I left the van idling for some time the lower one never did start. Is this normal? Thanks in advance

Dont really know why youve got 2 fans just checked our van and its only got 1. Could be a replacement of another vehicle or for air/con. Mind having said that the radiator is massive and could well need 2 fans which would mean that my van has the wrong fan on.If its cool]ing the van ok then id just leave it
