Guest JM-lusc Posted November 14, 2010 Posted November 14, 2010 Hi everybody, it's my first post  At my MOT last week I was told my brake ads needed to be replaced as they were wearing thin. I decided to have a go myself before taking them to the garage so I could do it myself in the future. I watched countless guides and was pretty sure I could do it. I bought EBC green stuff pads and all other fitting equipment needed such as torque wrench and copper grease etc. I removed the caliper shields, removed old pads and cleaned everything up with brake cleaner and a wire brush. I then removed the brake fluid resevoir cap and very slowly retracted the caliper pistons fully back so the new pads would fit. Once the were both retracted I retightened the brake fluid cap. Everything seemed to go fine so I inserted the new pads and retightened everythign back up to the correct torque. I pumped the brake pedal and went for a test drive. There was a bit of grinding at first but this stopped after a couple of minutes. Brake pedal seems as firm as it was previously and it doesn't feel spongy at all. But, when I press the brake pedal in at low speeds I hear a sucking noise which I don't remember before. Does anybody elses do this or have I done something wrong? The sucking sound seems to be coming from the under the bonnet near the brake fuld resevoir (assume master cyliner etc). I'm going to get it serviced sometime this week hopefully and I'll ask them to check it, but just wondered if anyone knew if it was normal? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! Quote
paul.h Posted November 14, 2010 Posted November 14, 2010 Is it the sound of air being sucked in to the servo as you press the brake pedal, if so this is normal for all cars. If not, get somebody to press the pedal as you listen under the bonnet to see where it is coming from, possibly also try with the brake fluid reservoir cap slightly unscrewed in case the air hole has been blocked stopping air entering. Guest JM-lusc Posted November 14, 2010 Posted November 14, 2010 Hi. Yes it does sound like air being sucked in when I depress the pedal. I didn't notice it before but it might be just because I wasn't listening for it. Hope your right that it's just the servo sucking air in. I didn't mess with the master cylinder or brake servo when doing the pad change so it shouldn't be from loose hoses etc. Is it possible to damage the servo from doing a pad change? Appreciate the response. Quote
paul.h Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 I would think it impossible to damage the servo. If it was damaged, the brake pedal would require a lot of effort as when the engine is not running. When you stop the engine, then push the pedal down and you will hear air entering the servo under the dash area until all the vacuum has gone which is normal. When driving other noises will drown the sound. Quote
