coastline taxis Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Stay clear of the 1.6 engines they eat the turbos. Yes youl get decent mpg but the engine is just to small and the turbo has to do all the work and if you miss a oil change or use the wrong oil then what oil is in it starts to turn to sludge and is a proper pain to get rid of. Then youve got the fap filter to deal with. In my opinion youd be better going for a 8 valve 2 litre hdi they just run forever in fact in the event of a nucular war the only thing left would be cockroaches and 8 valve hdi engines Quote
Johndouglas Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 where should i buy it? - citroen / private / dealer?what should i look for?how much should i pay?saloon or estate?satnav? Coastline is right! The 1.6 is a good engine - in the right vehicle, but the C5 is just too heavy for it. You would find it gutless. Saloon or Estate? What do you want to use it for? It's an estate every time for me but the rest of the family always want a saloon.Satnav? Something else to go wrong. I prefer to use my Tomtom. I can update it when I want to.Where to buy? If you know a bit about cars then you'll get a better deal privately, but if not you can always go back to the dealer Quote

Thanks for that, matey. Just boosted my faith in the 2.0HDI. We've just bought a Berlingo Multispace 2.0HDI on a 54 Plate with 45k on the clock. Goes ok but a niggling "phantom fault" (main dealer's description) keeps bringing the Engine Management light off and on.Had none of that with the old Pug306 1.9D Quote
coastline taxis Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 List the fault on here as you never no someone might have the answer for you Quote
Guest womble Posted December 26, 2010 Posted December 26, 2010 List the fault on here as you never no someone might have the answer for youUnfortunately I haven't got myself a code reader yet, which is another minefield... do I buy a "cheap and cheerful" "chinglish" one and which one to go for???? coastline taxis Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Did the dealers not give you a print out when they done a diagnostic Quote
Guest womble Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Did the dealers not give you a print out when they done a diagnosticNO !!! is the short answer..... However the vehicle is supposedly covered by a comprehensive 12 months Citroen Select Used Vehicle Warranty. Service receptionist at Manchester just stated that "No active faults were logged in the system and the Engine Management Light has been reset, it is a "phanton fault", ok to carry on driving" The further trouble we have is that we live in Stoke but the Citroen Dealership we purchased from is in Sale, Manchester which are 35 miles apart. A visit to the local dealer when MIL light on again, they didn't even know what a Citroen Select Used Vehicle Warranty was and further, seemed to delight in telling me the vehicle would have to have a diagnostic check first and if no faults found then it would cost me c£35.00 for a diagnostic. My parting comment was, "Ok next time you see me will probably be with my vehicle strapped to the back of an RAC Breakdown truck." What I want the code reader for is to get the raw data from the ECU and write down the listing of events etc and then forearmed to go back to Manchester and waft this under their nostrils and further, to involve Citroen themselves. At present, the MIL light comes on and extinguishes at will, no set pattern nor any de-rating or limp moding of engine. Just wish I could get this blessed fault ironed out and then I'd be reasonably happy with the motor Quote
Johndouglas Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 they didn't even know what a Citroen Select Used Vehicle Warranty was I'm sure they were being evasive. A select used car warranty is backed by Citroen UK themselves and not by the dealer. Therefore warranty work can be done by any dealer. If it were my car I would contact Customer Services at Citroen telling them that you were dissatisfied with the way their agent was dealing with the complaint. Quote

Still got 10 mths to run on warranty and to get sorted. The jury is still out as to whether the local dealer was being evasive or if it was just lack of knowledge of the Citroen Warrany Procedure by the receptionist. She was asking a lot of other people around her about other things so perhaps the "New Kid On The Block", too old to be YTS!!! Quote
