Guest pix226 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 I have a new C5 2.0HDI which is struggling to turn in 40mpg. Citroen said it could take up to 4,000 miles before it delivered better consumption but it's now at 4,000 miles and is still struggling to achieve 40mpg. Has anyone else experienced this? Quote
Johndouglas Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 What sort of runs are you doing and in what gear? HDI's are noticeably thirsty around town, especially when the engine is cold. Get into top gear with the rev counter at around 2000 and you should be getting 50mpg. Also check for front binding brakes, incorrect tyre pressures and a bootfull of extra weight. Quote

A lot of my driving is motorway/dual carriageway and 'A' roads and very little town driving which is why I am so concerned. My previous car (Volvo)had a combined consumption of 43.5 mpg and averaged 42 mpg overall but would do 45 mpg+ on long runs. I was expecting to get 48 mpg+ with this car as it claims 53 mpg combined. I don't usually carry much in the boot so it can't be that either. Quote
DaveHerns Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Maybe as you're driving it gently it will take more than 4 k miles to loosen up ? Mine took a while before it gave it's best Quote
Guest pix226 Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Maybe as you're driving it gently it will take more than 4 k miles to loosen up ? Mine took a while before it gave it's best Thanks for the advice - perhaps I'll try giving it a bit of stick and see if that loosens it up a bit. I know diesels tend to take a little longer to run in but I've not had a fuel consumption issue like this before. How long did yours take to start delivering reasonable consumption? Quote
DaveHerns Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 I'd say 10K miles .One reason why I'd rather never have a brand new car .They're so much better after they've loosened upMine's giving better consumption at 65K miles than ever before and all I can think of is that I'm using fully synthetic oil - who knows what my local main dealer was putting in it Quote
Oldmicrochip Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I have had 2xC5's, the first a Mk 1 2.2 SX from 60K to 110K miles, and the one now is a Mk2 2Ltr VTR bought at 24K now 51K, both I drive the same. Keep the RPM below/around 2.000rpm, out on the normal roads engage Cruse at 50mph, and the Motorway 60-65mph,thats just over 2K rpm, I always got 50+mph solo. I found that dropping the motoway speed from 70 to 60 gets over 50mph somtimes high 50's, this is always good using Cruse control except on town. Hope that helps. Quote

How are you measuring your MPG? When my 2007 hdi was new, consumption seemed disappointing - on the trip computer. Actual fill figures proved OK, and the trip computer error, initially 7% pessimistic, now at 90,000Km stands at an average 15% pessimistic. Checks done over 5,000km or so, with initial and final fills at the same bowser using the same technique, and a final calculation made. Regards, Coolscan. Quote
Johndouglas Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 I've just driven my C5 from Calais to Malaga - 1250 miles. I kept the speed below 70mpg and at journey's end the display panel showed 49.5mpg. In fact I filled the tank three times and working out consumption fom brim to brim, actual consumption was 48.3mpg.
