Guest monster025 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Hi I am new to the board so i hope i am doing this right?? I have a 52 plate Citroen C3 1.6i 5 door Exclusive with a cooling fan that will come on for no reason? I had the car twice go dead over the Christmas period with me thinking that the battery had perished the viewing eye having gone black on the battery. I was walking away from the car yesterday when the cooling fan just turned itself on without me having been out in the car. I am wondering if this is an ECU fault or something else? Has anyone else had this happen and if so how did you rectify it? Many thanks for your help! Quote
paul.h Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 If it is the engine cooling fan, if you turn on the ignition does it show a high temperature or anything on the gauge ? If so then there may be a temperature sensor fault - check the connections are clean and dry and the wiring is not damaged. If nothing is found then a sensor may need to be replaced. If you have a code reader with live data then you will be able to see the indicated temperature to show there is a fault. On the C3 there are 2 sensors at the end of the cylinder head, (one for the gauge and one for a high temp alarm) cost about £20 each so not an expensive job to replace. Until you get it sorted then it may be worthwhile unplugging the fan or removing its fuse when the car is not being used. Quote
Guest monster025 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 A quick update i have replaced both temperature sensors and problem still occuring. I am now at a loss of what to do as dont want to replace ecu and wiring loom? Any other ideas? Cheers Quote
paul.h Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 You have not noted if there is an indicated high temperature or if the gauge is showing anything with the ignition on but before running the engine. Quote

I didnt notice it to be honest but will have a look tomorrow. I have taken the connectors off the ecu to have a look and have seen some rust and blue gunk, I am wondering if that might just be the problem? I will clean it up tomorrow with some electrical cleaner the pins are all still there so hopefully with some tlc it might work? Cheers Quote

Cheers Hi just an update i have cleaned up the ECU connector and found one of the pins had snapped off leaving just a small nub on top of the ECU i fashioned a pin from a bulb prong and soldered it in place and refitted the connector. The car started first time and has run fine since. Before replacing the pin it would not start just turn over so i believe this must have been the problem. To be honest i am now looking to part exchange this car as soon as possible as this is definitely a temporary repair. Quote
