johntom Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 Hii went to check the suspension fluid? but couldn't see any below the resovoir basket. 3 local autospares shops have tried to sell me LHM fluid, is this correct or should it be something else? Quote
paul.h Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 From what I have read here, you check the level with the suspension on the lowest setting and it should be just at the bottom of the filling nozzle filter basket. Any higher and the tank may split. Should be LDS fluid only. Quote
coastline taxis Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 lds fluid only or youl blow the seals in your suspension and power steering Quote
johntom Posted November 18, 2010 Author Posted November 18, 2010 Hifinally obtained LDS fluid via ebay at only £4.50 per litre, compared to £12.50 + Vat at Citroen. I set the suspension to the bottom thinking it would just need topping up (couldn't see any fluid in the resovoir) and ended up putting the full litre in and still the fluid isn't at the bottom of the basket? Where has it gone, does it normally disappear with use or should i be looking for a leak? Quote

I'd be looking for a leak ;) A common and not always obvious leak can be the return line on the front struts, these crack and break at the top where they connect to the steel pipe, easy to check with suspension on high no need to remove wheel. johntom Posted November 19, 2010 Author Posted November 19, 2010 Hithe pipes at the top of the front suspension appear to be dry (where they join the metal pipes)? I have recently bought the car (76k miles) but without service history, could it just have never been topped up? Do they leak at the rear and how much fluid does the resovoir hold?I will keep adding fluid (when it arrives) until i get the level below the basket, then check again for leaks unless advised otherwise?many thanks Quote

Where has it gone, does it normally disappear with use or should i be looking for a leak?I take it you are referring to this. I have no idea if it's good to use or not, but it's not the genuine product from Total - the original looks like this. I'd be very concerned about using non-genuine stuff cos the wrong oil can cause you a lot of grief - far more than the 10 pounds/liter you save.unless some experienced member here can vouch for this product I would suggest you stay away from it (worst case, you may have to flush and discard all the LDS in your system and use ~4 fresh cans) edit: on further investigation, that seems to be the old Total logo... so it's perhaps genuine but old. I don't know if LDS has a shelf life...? If your LDS level is too low you can generally still continue to use the car at normal height, but it won't work (or at least, won't work well) if you try to raise the car - that's when it needs the most LDS.
