I have a 2002 C5 2.0 HDi estate. It's done 62,000 miles and has recently been serviced (air and fuel filters changed etc)

For the last few months acceleration has deteriorated (before and since the service).

Pulling away from stationary is not too bad, but putting your foot down on motorways is more noticeable (ie when you would like to overtake etc.)

In the past you could pull away at any speed and any rpm. Now very little happens below about 2000 rpm. The only solution is to change down to 4th or 3rd.

Any ideas?

Thanks Myglaren. I think I'm right in saying that this engine doesn't have a turbo!

You are wrong, I'm afraid. The 2.0 HDi has a turbo.

A friend had a problem with the floor mat sticking under the accelerator, and the cable having stretched. This limited performance on the accelerator, but performance using the resume button on the cruise control gave good results still. Removal of the offending mat and slack taken out the cable fixed the problem. (2.2 HDi auto)

Other checks:

Splits/leaks in hosing from turbo via intercooler to inlet manifold;

Sticking/faulty EGR valve;

Incorrectly fitted or clogged air filter;

MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor disconnected or defective;

Other more subtle fault with fault code that needs to be read on diagnostic.

Drive with the windows open past tall fences or walls and listen for turbo whistle.

I have never had a PSA car (Peugeot/Citroen) on which I could not hear the turbo.

HTH, HAND.

Randombloke,

Thanks for your reply. I've only had the car three years....you learn something every day!!

I guess my lack of knowledge about this car stems from the fact that I can't find a manual for it. Consequently this is the first car I've ever had to pay a garage to service; and I think I'm going to have to do just that for this problem.

I will let you know what the cause was when I get it fixed.

Cheers,

Mick.

If you have a French dictionary, you can get a manual from www.etai.fr (etudes techniques - similar to Haynes with lots of pictures so not being fluent in French is not a problem).

Thanks Paul.

I've tried this site before; but when you click on Citroen, it then asks for the model and the C5 is not amongst the options.

Are you suggesting I should look at a car with the same engine or am I going wrong somewhere?

Cheers,

Mick.

Just tried etai site and as noted above, C5 not listed. The Amazon.fr site has the old and new C5 manuals listed, it is worth also getting the new one since a lot of things are still relevant and the pictures are better, being colour photos as opposed to drawings. When I bought mine, amazon could not supply the old C5 manual but I was able to get it from culture-factory.fr but their website has been down for many months.

The engine may be the same as in a Peugeot 406, so you could borrow a Haynes for this from the local library.

Thank you to all those who responded to my enquiry.

My C5 is back to normal performance thanks to a new Air Flow Meter.

Mick.
