Spec Levels C5 02 -03 Models
seefive replied to speedcat445's topic in Questions about the Citroen C5
The VTR is an odd one. I have heard that a red "R" on the badge neans it's higher spec than a black "R" - who knows? The headlamp unit is huge on these cars . It encompasses headlight, main beam (separate), sidelight, indicator and fog lights where fitted. Fog light is angled down so it projects on the road the same as if it were under the bumper. Xenon headlights are far brigheter than fog lights, however, so make them a waste of time really if you go for a high spec. -
Spec Levels C5 02 -03 Models

I had a 2002 sx and it had auto wipers trip computer and fogs ( built into the headlamp unit, so not obvious when you look at the car) To get cruise , xenons, parking sensors, powerfold mirrors, tyre pressure monitors, electric seats etc etc you will need an exclusive - well worth it for not much more money on an older car. The VTR back then was a "pretend" sporty upgrade of the SX with bigger wheels and sports trim, but the same performance. Hope that helps -
This is a fairly common problem on Mk1's and there are a number of posts on this site. I would say the auto light feature is acting up due to a failing comms unit, which will cost a few hundred pounds to fix. A simple work-around which I used when I had a Mk1 was to drive on sidelights in the day. This overrides the auto lights and doesn't really do any harm. Sidelight bulbs are easy enough to replace. (unlike the Mk2!!)

Hi Having problems with my auto box. It sometimes doesn't engage drive, and I sit there with the engine revving going nowhere. If I flick it back into neutral then drive, it engages with a thump, and I'm off again. Drives perfectly once it's going, changes up and down and manual sequential shift works fine. Car has recently been driven through deep rainwater ( almost up to the sills with suspension raised), so I'm thinking it could be electrical and hopefully temporary fault. From what I've read, most of the auto problems are electrical/electronic, rather than mechanical. Car is a 2008 mk 2 petrol with 4 speed box Any help appreciated Thanks

Changed the spark plugs today (surprisingly easy for a non-mechanical type like me) and that seems to have fixed it. Noticeably sharper acceleration and keener to change down (auto box) Plugs are scheduled to be changed every 40,000 miles which I think is too long. They looked dirty and worn, but nothing nasty like oil or burnt electrodes. On a car with such low miles (18k) I wouldn't expect any major wear. I was more concerned about possible engine management or auto box software-related issues

As a footnote to this (long) thread, Halfords will do the replacement now - I had one done a couple of weeks ago on my Mk2 (offside) at the Uxbridge branch They have a general condition "subject to inspection" which seems to have replaced the old blacklist. No real problems doing it, a bit fiddly getting the bulb back in (aligning the lugs and getting it in square) but this must be tricky with the lens unit removed or pulled forward anyway

Hi 2008 mk 2 petrol auto exclusive(not HPI) has developed a hesitation when pulling away cold. Pressing accelerator harder than normal clears it, and it then drives OK. Recently serviced (Indie garage I've been using for years), 18k miles on the clock. It feels like the speed limiter is holding it back. Limiter is switched off, and doesn't operate below 18 mph anyway. The car was a cat d write-off, repaired before I bought it a year ago (with my knowledge), so no warranty. Hope this isn't something nasty developing. I've tried changing petrol brand, and using manual side of the gearbox without any improvement. Hesitation happens in forward and reverse gears. Any ideas welcome Thanks

I had this problem with my old 2002 C5. It was a 15 amp fuse labelled "Navigation system" in the handbook. My car didn't have sat nav, so I guess this is the generic name for the central display.
-
Hold on JD - I think this is a mk3/saloon ("recently bought a 1 year old") As you say, there's no problem on the mk 1/2 hatchbacks. The new model however isn't renowned for good interior space. This sounds like a dangerous fault. Typically German!!

Finally got the dreaded sidelight failure last week (offside) and considered my options Sell the car in daylight and give a false address Take it the dealer and get stiffed with a 3 figure bill ("sorry sir that means stripping off the bumper..") hmm Ignore it till MOT time and hope I don't get a pull from the boyzinblue Tried to change it myself with predictable lack of success Then decided to give Halfords a try - result! The young lad had the bulb out in about 5 minutes.Getting the new one in took about 20 minutes, aided in the end by me un-bolting the LDS tank to make more room. Total cost £10, Total hassle none . Thank you Halfords. I'm sure I still couldn't do it myself - my fingers are too short. But at least I know a man who can.

Just had the osf wheel arch liner and front cross piece which sits under the radiator replaced, and the parts were £60. plus nominal labour charge - bill came to just over £100 with vat. I still don't have the undershield that goes under the sump, but interestingly Haynes says remove this "where fitted" for an oil change - so not really essential. Arch liners are all safe and secure without the centre piece,so prabably won't bother with it.

It's the button that slides left and right to select which mirror you want to adjust. Get it in the centre position and pull it towards the back of the car to fold/unfold

Hi c5 exclusive 2.0 petrol, - mk 2 hatchback 2008 registered Had the car in for its first service this week, and was told it needs new panels/guards under the sump. Quite correct - the back of the bumper valance is connected to thin air on one side, and the tyre is chewing at the panel when I turn the steering on full lock. I bought the car as a repaired cat d (for about half book price!), and this seems to be the one thing where a corner was cut. I'm quite keen to avoid spending upwards of £100 on a couple of plastic panels,so need a good suppler of used parts , if anyone can help. Thanks

Thanks for the information. To recap - getting new tyres is not a problem, however the fitter won't put a new valve in, as they do on conventional wheels without sensors. My own tyre is probably losing air through a slow puncture rather than the valve, and my pump guage confirms it is losing pressue, the monitor is correct. John - can you expand on the new valve insert option? Sensor equipped valves are metal rather than plastic, and attached to radio transmitters that sit inside the rim, presumabley held in place by the metal vlave body. Is there something that can be fitted when you buy new tyres, without upsetting the transmitter? Cheers

Hi c5 exclusive mk2 I am getting warnings on the screen quite frequently on loss of nsf tyre pressure - I pump it up and it lasts a few weeks before the beep happens again. If the problem turns out to be the valve does this mean an expensive trip to the main dealer? New valve complete with transmitter, and computer time? Alternatively is there a way to disable the monitor? I don't know what's causing it at the moment - more likely to be the tyre, but just wondered if the valves need replacing occasionally or not. Tyre retailers can't/won't touch them, understandably Thanks

Careful. 2008 was a "cross-over" year - 57 and early 08 reg cars were mk2 hatchback types, later registrations were the current model, Toyota-Audi mongrels. These newer cars do not all have the hydraulic supensions systems which have always made Citroens supremely comfortable, and they lack some of the kit taken for granted on the hatchbacks ( such as Xenon lights as standard) They are also less roomy, with significantly less head-room. You guessed it - I've got the older type (July 08 registered) and would not buy the newer model - I'll wait for the DS5(?) that will replace the C5 in a few years..
-
You don't need the physical MOT cert to tax the car - you can do it online, and DVLA automatically checks with the VOSA computer ( also validates insurance in this way) - so this isn't a real problem for you..
-
Best bet is to buy an MP3 version from ebay/Blaupunkt outlet. It worked fine for my C5. They currently have one for £130, or 140 euro ( a bit less) if you visit their ebay shop. Other options around £110 from other suppliers which may be fine, some offer free vin coding, which is extra if you go to Blaupunkt. I can recommend Blaupunkt from personal experience.

Trip/mpg Computer Doesnt Appear To Work
seefive replied to 16v205's topic in Problems and Fixes - C5
I used to have an 02 reg C5 SX and yes the button on the right hand stalk should bring up all the options like mpg, distance to refuel etc. The only time I had problems with it was when I blew a fuse - may be worth a check? Citroen's fuse labeling is a bit obtuse - I found one called "Navigation system" was causing the problem, and the car didn't have sat nav.. Have you tried the left hand stalk? that brought on auto-lights in mine, but yours may be different.. -
Hey Dude Nice talking to you on this board, and good luck with the new car. So the dreaded diesel got to you in the end, I always said petrol was best! And yes that was Ian Hunter/Mott the Hoople - don't you miss the simple 70's?? Best Regards

Hi I've got the problem all mk 2 owner dread - my offside sidelight needs replacing. I'm not keen to remove the bumper ( plus headlamp washers, parking sensors etc), so I was wondering if it's possible/advisable to disconnect the LDS fluid reservoir in order to get access to the back of the headlamp unit. It unbolts easy eneough, but I'm a bit concerned about disconnecting the hose. Either that or it's main dealer job. Can't see me getting much change from £100 for a bulb replacement! Crazy design. Good money for the dealers! Thanks
-
Why would you want a Skoda? I've heard of one that blew 2 turbos in 18 months - from new! Very dodgy as they get older/out of warranty.

Should be easy.. I used to have a Mk1 c5sx with halogen lights and now have an exclusive with Xenons. Thay are hugely superior to halogen, giving a brilliant white light. They start up completely differently too , with a brief flash, followed by a rapid "warm up " to full brightness, a bit like a flourescent light. Mine's a Mk2 and the lights have washers and also turn with the steering . I thought xenons were always standard on exclusives, but I may be wrong

Disagree on the sound quality issue. DAB is inferior to FM to begin with. Its advantage is signal strength and lack of interference, plus extra stations, and the fact that it will still work in the future. At home I prefer FM over DAB, (I have a "duel fuel" tuner in my Hi Fi system), in the same way I favour vinyl over CD. Much easier on the ear. In a car, those differences are less noticeable, so DAB is fine. Changing head unit is not an option on a Mk2 - the "radio" actually controls lots of the car's settings ( clock, directional lights, auto lights, display options etc etc.) - a silly idea that Citroen dropped on the latest C5.

Hi I recently bought a Pure Highway for my Mk2 C5 and I'm pretty impressed with it. I now have access to lots of good stations, and I'm future - proofed against the planned FM switch-off in 2015 The unit comes with a sat nav-type window mount, but this would messy with wires everywhere, so I simply blu - tacked it to the ash tray door and the centre console, angled up so I can read the display, with the power and aerial wires tucked behind, then down beside the drivers seat. Power is from the switched cigarette lighter feed The supplied window mount aerial was useless (not helped by the Citroen heat resistant screen), so I bought the Pure magnetic roof mount aerial, which gves me rock solid reception of National and London based stations. The system works by re-transmitting the signal on FM, and the standard RD4 radio is tuned to pick it up. It can also be connected to the cd changer slot of the RD4 via a line out socket. You can connect an ipod to the Pure which will then feed it to the radio if required One nice little touch - a 3 minute record buffer, so you can rewind to the traffic report if, like me , you "tune out" when they start talking about M this and junction that, then panic when you realise they are talking about the road you're on.. Cost was £40 for a refurbished Highway on ebay (or £80 new) plus £20 for the aerial. Rock and Roll!!
