  1. The VTR is an odd one. I have heard that a red "R" on the badge neans it's higher spec than a black "R" - who knows? The headlamp unit is huge on these cars . It encompasses headlight, main beam (separate), sidelight, indicator and fog lights where fitted. Fog light is angled down so it projects on the road the same as if it were under the bumper. Xenon headlights are far brigheter than fog lights, however, so make them a waste of time really if you go for a high spec.
  2. I had a 2002 sx and it had auto wipers trip computer and fogs ( built into the headlamp unit, so not obvious when you look at the car) To get cruise , xenons, parking sensors, powerfold mirrors, tyre pressure monitors, electric seats etc etc you will need an exclusive - well worth it for not much more money on an older car. The VTR back then was a "pretend" sporty upgrade of the SX with bigger wheels and sports trim, but the same performance. Hope that helps
  3. This is a fairly common problem on Mk1's and there are a number of posts on this site. I would say the auto light feature is acting up due to a failing comms unit, which will cost a few hundred pounds to fix. A simple work-around which I used when I had a Mk1 was to drive on sidelights in the day. This overrides the auto lights and doesn't really do any harm. Sidelight bulbs are easy enough to replace. (unlike the Mk2!!)
  4. Hi Having problems with my auto box. It sometimes doesn't engage drive, and I sit there with the engine revving going nowhere. If I flick it back into neutral then drive, it engages with a thump, and I'm off again. Drives perfectly once it's going, changes up and down and manual sequential shift works fine. Car has recently been driven through deep rainwater ( almost up to the sills with suspension raised), so I'm thinking it could be electrical and hopefully temporary fault. From what I've read, most of the auto problems are electrical/electronic, rather than mechanical. Car is a 2008 mk 2 petrol with 4 speed box Any help appreciated Thanks
  5. Changed the spark plugs today (surprisingly easy for a non-mechanical type like me) and that seems to have fixed it. Noticeably sharper acceleration and keener to change down (auto box) Plugs are scheduled to be changed every 40,000 miles which I think is too long. They looked dirty and worn, but nothing nasty like oil or burnt electrodes. On a car with such low miles (18k) I wouldn't expect any major wear. I was more concerned about possible engine management or auto box software-related issues
  6. As a footnote to this (long) thread, Halfords will do the replacement now - I had one done a couple of weeks ago on my Mk2 (offside) at the Uxbridge branch They have a general condition "subject to inspection" which seems to have replaced the old blacklist. No real problems doing it, a bit fiddly getting the bulb back in (aligning the lugs and getting it in square) but this must be tricky with the lens unit removed or pulled forward anyway
  7. Hi 2008 mk 2 petrol auto exclusive(not HPI) has developed a hesitation when pulling away cold. Pressing accelerator harder than normal clears it, and it then drives OK. Recently serviced (Indie garage I've been using for years), 18k miles on the clock. It feels like the speed limiter is holding it back. Limiter is switched off, and doesn't operate below 18 mph anyway. The car was a cat d write-off, repaired before I bought it a year ago (with my knowledge), so no warranty. Hope this isn't something nasty developing. I've tried changing petrol brand, and using manual side of the gearbox without any improvement. Hesitation happens in forward and reverse gears. Any ideas welcome Thanks
  8. I had this problem with my old 2002 C5. It was a 15 amp fuse labelled "Navigation system" in the handbook. My car didn't have sat nav, so I guess this is the generic name for the central display.
  9. Hold on JD - I think this is a mk3/saloon ("recently bought a 1 year old") As you say, there's no problem on the mk 1/2 hatchbacks. The new model however isn't renowned for good interior space. This sounds like a dangerous fault. Typically German!!
  10. Finally got the dreaded sidelight failure last week (offside) and considered my options Sell the car in daylight and give a false address Take it the dealer and get stiffed with a 3 figure bill ("sorry sir that means stripping off the bumper..") hmm Ignore it till MOT time and hope I don't get a pull from the boyzinblue Tried to change it myself with predictable lack of success Then decided to give Halfords a try - result! The young lad had the bulb out in about 5 minutes.Getting the new one in took about 20 minutes, aided in the end by me un-bolting the LDS tank to make more room. Total cost £10, Total hassle none . Thank you Halfords. I'm sure I still couldn't do it myself - my fingers are too short. But at least I know a man who can.
  11. Just had the osf wheel arch liner and front cross piece which sits under the radiator replaced, and the parts were £60. plus nominal labour charge - bill came to just over £100 with vat. I still don't have the undershield that goes under the sump, but interestingly Haynes says remove this "where fitted" for an oil change - so not really essential. Arch liners are all safe and secure without the centre piece,so prabably won't bother with it.
  12. It's the button that slides left and right to select which mirror you want to adjust. Get it in the centre position and pull it towards the back of the car to fold/unfold
  13. Hi c5 exclusive 2.0 petrol, - mk 2 hatchback 2008 registered Had the car in for its first service this week, and was told it needs new panels/guards under the sump. Quite correct - the back of the bumper valance is connected to thin air on one side, and the tyre is chewing at the panel when I turn the steering on full lock. I bought the car as a repaired cat d (for about half book price!), and this seems to be the one thing where a corner was cut. I'm quite keen to avoid spending upwards of £100 on a couple of plastic panels,so need a good suppler of used parts , if anyone can help. Thanks
