Guest lilrolo1989 Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Hi all, I've been reading various topics on here about towing and the relay system NEEDING to be used for caravan towing purposes.I'm going to be towing my race car every other weekend in daylight only, so the only electrics that the trailer will be using are indicators and brake lights, towing a distance of 10miles to get to the event. would it be ok to wire 12n straight to rear light loom as i did with my '54' plate laguna which also stated that i needed a relay but ran fine doing it the rear light loom way for 3+ years. hope someone could help me on this, Many thanks, steve. paul.h Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 What car have you got ?Even if you only wired up the stop and indicator lights for day light use, I suspect it would be illegal and what if poor lighting such as rain when you need the rear lights and no. plate lights. I have seen on this site that people have wired up the 12N socket without a 7 way relay but when we did ours (C5 2.2 hdi 2004 mark 1) we also needed a 12S for the caravan so wires had to be run from the battery so no more effort to run one for the 12N also. Guest lilrolo1989 Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 the only reason why i am asking this question is as i only need trailer lights ( no accessories) and as my C5 is used as a taxi the roof sign is wired to the back tail lights via scotch lock, so i thought in princible i could do the same for 12N socket. Johndouglas Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Lighting regs for trailers state that they must have on the back two red sidelights, two red stop lamps, an illuminated number plate and two triangular red reflectors plus amber indicators designed to flash between 60 and 120 times per minute. A smart 7 relay is about 20 quid. Isn't it worth doing the job properly? Quote
Guest lilrolo1989 Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 totally agree on wirring up properly but as there is no way i can get one from at this moment in time as i can not get my hands on a relay and i need my trailer for tomorow for a 10 mile trip, it was just a question for a short term solution Quote

Hi mate just go and buy the 12n kit it comes with the buzzer and scotch locks for your indicators and costs £7.45 , wire it into the n/s side rear light loom it really is a piece of cake to do, all you need is a 12volt light or tester to find the correct wires. Bit of a tip for you once you have found each wire for indicators and lights just wrap a bit of masking tape on each wire and write what its for because all the wires in the rear loom are all white. I did mine few months ago will take you about an hour to wire it all up, Have a look at this link.http://www.just-tow.co.uk/towbar-fitting.html Quote
