Hello I'm new to this forum and apologise in advance if I am posting in the wrong place!

I have a C5 2.2 diesal saloon 2002 registration. Yesterday I noticed that when I changed gear there was a wining noise coming from what I thought was the engine and at times it seemed to race a little!

( sorry being blonde and female is my only excuse here!!)

Anyway last night I drove down the road and the clutch peddle stuck to the floor and was obviously broken. I couldn't therefore drive the car and had it towed home. I have been told that the clutch has gone and will need to be replaced.

Can anyone help me please? Is what I have tried to describe typical of a dead clutch? If so has anyone any rough idea on how much it will cost me to be replaced please? I live in Southend on Sea Essex and obviously would need to have the car taken to be fixed as I can't drive it.

Any help would be appreciated thank you.

Regards,

Rocio

When I have had to replace a clutch symptoms have been juddering when letting the pedal up on one and the clutch slipping on others so that the engine speed increased but not the car. A whining noise could be the clutch release bearing has failed. The pedal has only stayed at the floor though when the master cylinder at the pedal which pushes the clutch fluid out to the clutch (as for brakes) has needed replacing. On the 2.2 hdi I believe you have a dual mass flywheel which should also be replaced at the same time as the clutch (if your clutch does need replacing).

To get an idea of parts costs you could look on the eurocarparts website and labour costs will be a few hours.

Sound very much like your thrust bearing has gone, anyway your gearbox has to come out. its roughly 3 hours to take a box out then a hour to swap clutch etc then 3 hours to put back. so your looking at 7 hours labour plus parts

heres a list of what youl need to do the job properly

Youl need the following

1x clutch plate

1x pressure plate

1x release bearing

1x nose cone

1x fulcrum arm

2x litre bottles of gearbox oil

and if your removing the dual mass flywheel (i would as there very unreliable) 1x solid flywheel

with your tow in fee youl be looking at the £800.

Thank you so much for your replies. I have no idea about anything to do with cars and obviously need to go with what i'm told. I'm not in a financial position to pay for work that doesn't need to be done but also appreciate that I need to be safe especially as I am a single mother.

I suppose I need to get someone else to the house to give me a second opinion too. All in though it does sound as if it will cost me lots of pennies!!

Thank you again for your replies.

Regards Rocio
