On giving my 2003 03 1.4 Hdi C3 a 'good' clean, I've noticed bubbling rust under the paint on the inside of both rear doors, on the curved part which lines up with the wheel arch. I bought the car second hand a couple of years ago, and it had not had the Citroen corrosion check carried out at four years, so the twelve year corrosion warranty does not stand. Mechanically the car is near perfect. In the past I've had cars that are mechanically sound and will run forever, but the bodywork has let them down. Had hoped that the bodywork of newer cars would keep up with the mechanical side but it would appear not. Has anyone else any experience of this happening?

Its unussual fro them to suffer from corrosion.......it's probable that it has had a repair at somepoint and not had its anti corrosion protection applied properly.

How large are these spots, and do they flake like rust coming through or are they solid to the touch? I have a couple of small ones, and asked about them at a garage with a body shop (who happened to be doing my MoT at the time) and he said they were actually tiny dents from gravel strikes. The tyres can fire bits of gravel and dent that part of the wheel arch because the plastic liner doesn't quite extend that far. I must admit I wasn't totally convinced, but later I happened to notice the same thing on a vintage car owned by someone I know - and he gave me the same explanation. Even if this is the case, the damaged area is still a concern for potential rust in the future.

I plan to have a much better look at mine to see if I can think of some DIY cure.

The car belonged to my boyfriend before I got it. He'd had it from two years old and we're fairly sure it hasn't had any bodywork repairs. We didn't realise that to keep the 12 year corrosion warranty intact, the car had to be checked by a dealership at four years then every two years. Just seems odd that it's on the inside of both rear doors, in exactly the same places on both. Thanks for the reply though.

The spots are quite small, but cover an area of only millimetres wide but about fifteen centimetres long. They're solid to touch at the moment, but wouldn't take a lot of persuasion to start flaking! Don't think they can be from gravel fired up by the tyres as they are on the inside of both of the rear doors, and not the actual wheel arches. Thanks for the reply though.

Hi. I have a similar problem on my 2010 airdream,at the moment it is being submitted to Citroen for a warranty claim. My car is only just 3 years old in August !!! Area in question, both  sills in the area you describe, around the boot lock and part of the tailgate, the door lock assembly on all doors appear to be rusty??? the seat frames also??.

Standby for more when I go for gold with a full valet this weekend.

Welcome to the forum.

The bodywork on the Citroens we had owned have not suffered from rust so it seems unusual, especially on a car only 3 years old. Any stone chips though I have painted to prevent rust occuring. Citroen sell the pencil type of touch up paints, the colour and laquer together for about £13 which is dear but better than having rust to sort out later.

Let us know how you get on with the warranty claim.
