Hi. This is my first post. Had a 2.2 hdi exclusive for the past 2 years. Great car but never been happy with fuel consumption. I get 36 mpg displayed and barely get over 500 miles from a tank full. I used to have a 2.0L hdi 406 that always sat at 47 mpg. How does 36 mpg compare with other 2.2 hdi's?

Hi Karlz, I have the 2.2hdi 173 bhp VTX+ auto and unless you run at insane speeds mine comes out at about 36 round town and 39-44 on motorways, although I did get it up to 47.9 mpg driving like I couldn't afford to pay for the next tankfull lol.

My 55 plate 407 2.0 hdi would always return 49-53 on the motorways, so I suppose I was expecting a drop going up to the 2.2 and then a six speed auto. Must say it does pull like a train and is supremely comfortable, just a pity Citroen customer service is so shocking, they are unhelpful and ignorant in the extreme and would only recommend ours to a suicide bomber!!!!!

I get average of 54mpg on my 2002 HDI, 2.2 - and that's with 124,000 miles on the clock!

Thanks guys for your posts. It seems mine is a bit on the low side like I thought. I have replaced the swirl actuator, sprayed the airflow sensor with electrical cleaner, run diesel redex for a few tankfuls but no luck. Not much power at low revs but once above 1500 pulls like a train. Might try a new airflow sensor.

You have not said what type/speed of driving you are doing - from memory, official figures for a manual 2.2 hdi hatchback are about 32 mpg urban, 57 mpg extra urban, combined about 45 mpg with slight differences over the years. It also pays to reset the trip computer at the start of a journey. On a long motorway trip and not in to the wind, keeping about 65 mph, we get about 50 to 53 mpg, much faster and it can easily drop to 45 mpg (2004 2.2 hdi vtr hatchback, mark 1). Pulling a caravan gives about 30 mpg.

Hi paul your figures are the same as my car it averages about 50mpg on motorway and about 30mpg with 4berth caravan on the back, but just driving around local school runs and into town i get 29-30mpg so sounds pretty much the same. Mine is a 2004

2.2 hdi mk1 exclusive.

Try blanking off the egr valve see if it helps any ,you can just put a ball bearing in the vaccum pipe that goes to the valve, i have done this on loads of my diesel cars over the years and it always seems to improve them somewhat.

You carnt do this on some of the later models about 2004 and on because the managment will see the egr not working and flag the man. light
