Georgezx9 Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Bought my 2001 c5 as a great tow car, which it is, if only they had decent electrics. First problem: a year ago, tried to start in gear, immobiliser would not cancel and car would not start, local citroen specialist could find nothing wrong, put fuel in and charged the battery hey presto it worked. Then realised that if I did not wait til dash lights went off, it would not start, and had to wait 30 seconds for key fob to be recieved, then it would start. Next problem: I forgot to wait for the dash lights to go out and would not start, even after waiting it would not start. So remembered what the garage had done and put fuel in and charged the battery - it started!!! next problem exactly as above, this time just put fuel in and it started. next problem but I then just waited for a couple of hours and it started. Today, waited for dash lights to go out and nothing, waited to use the key and nothing, so had a can of diesel in the boot, put some in and it started. Occassionally, during the periods when it wont start it will say immobiliser fault on the dash. HELP, before I take to mt garage who plugs it in and it says nothing wrong. GY Quote
coastline taxis Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Hi Just a few questions You keep saying you have to charge battery up is this because you run it down cranking the engine or is the battery on its way out or not getting charged of the alternator. have you checked battery terminals to make sure there secure Is it a automatic What fuel system is it Do you run the car with little fuel in it And finally what light are on the dash Quote
Georgezx9 Posted September 5, 2011 Author Posted September 5, 2011 Hi it is a 2.2 diesel manual box. The car appears to turn over well. never checked the voltage or charging voltage though. The lights on the dash are just the normal oil pressure lights etc and the stop light, all go out once started. I have actually run out with 90 miles showing on the computer before!!!, but this was a couple of years ago. Never really run it very low because of that, the second time I had this issue happen, I had 130 miles, but this morning, I have half a tank and computer says 280 miles. Noted on another post that many C5 problems are caused by low battery issues Quote
coastline taxis Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 are you getting the engine management light/abs light/airbag light on your dash when you put the ignition on aswell. If this was mine id start by checking the output from the alternator and do a load test on the battery (both free from most car discoubnt stores). While your there get them to put a new battery in your key fob. next do a proper bsi reset on your car doing a search on here will show you the corredt way. once done resync your key with your imobiliser again a search on here will show you how. Try that and see what happens. As for putting fuel in then the car starts next time just try taking filler cap off then replacing it as yours will have magnets and micro switches around the cap for the f a p filter) that may be broke Quote
paul.h Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Does it also not start with the spare key ? Does removing and putting the key back in the ignition without all the other things help ? The key is detected at the ignition switch for the immobiliser and the detector (Citroen call it a transponder) could be at fault. Quote
