bigbri838 Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 I have noticed recently that my trusty c5 estate has developed an itermitent but very annoying trait. when you least expect it, e.g. pulling out to overtake, it refuses to accelerate normally. i have noticed that when it is doing this the usual turbo whine is not as evident if at all. i have had the car on a snap on scanner and it comes up no faults found which implies that it must be mechanical, but a turbo failure would be total not intermittent. the wastegate control seems free enough and I am at a total loss as to where to look next.Any ideas o clever ones? Quote
paul.h Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 There may be some help if you look at the www.saabscene.com forum. Most Saabs have turbos and there are thousands of postings there. The people there are very helpful also. Quote
old'uns Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 got same problem :D just back from france with caravan, real struggle sometimes waiting for power to kick in. seemed to help by backing off acc. a touch, overfuelling?at first put it down to heat & towing, but back now still same running solo.have also lost 'whistling' noise that i could hear fron N/S dash. intercooler probs? old'uns Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 spoken today to garage that services my car, most likely to be EGR valve sooted up, suggested take apart & clean, quite common, not only on PSA cars.now all i have to do is find EGR valve!! Quote
bigbri838 Posted August 11, 2006 Author Posted August 11, 2006 foolishly took the motor to france with the caravan hoping that I was imagining it all. I wasn't, high temperatures did not help and I've noticed that after prolonged idling it is definitely worse. All in all the egr (exhaust gas recycling) valve does seem to be a prime suspect. Glad I read the post, I was about to change the cat converter! :D Quote
bigbri838 Posted September 23, 2006 Author Posted September 23, 2006 just a quick update, now at 178000miles still have the fault although a nice man from peugeot (yes thats right, the other psa partner) had it on their laptop and diagnosed the turbo wastegate solenoid valve. Turbo was only working at 88% when all was ok and a big fat 0% when it wasn't. THIS IS A COMMON FAULT ON HIGH MILERS PARTICULARLY TAXIS. There is another solenoid valve that actuates the mechanical EGR valve and this can play up too. Next week all will be well, with another 12% boost I will have to be carefull that I dont rip the 'a' frame off my caravan! Quote
podpeeze Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Hmmmm interesting. My 02 2.0 HDi estate which I picked up at the weekend seems to suffer from a similar problem. Except that the turbo is always late for the party! From cold (only time it does it) for the first mile or so there's no turbo reaction then all of a sudden in she comes and she's fine after that. I do let the car idle for a good minute before driving.I was fishing through the service history and found a recent invoice with the following advisory....."Turbo Intercooler leaking" Could this be related? and is it as expensive as it sounds???The car was mega cheap to buy plus we already have an 03 exclusive with no problems at all. CheersJon Quote
Randombloke Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 I was fishing through the service history and found a recent invoice with the following advisory....."Turbo Intercooler leaking" Could this be related? and is it as expensive as it sounds???The car was mega cheap to buy plus we already have an 03 exclusive with no problems at all. The loss of turbo response and the leak from the intercooler are related. You can either pay up for a new intercooler or see if it's possible to simply plug the leaks in the old one. It may be worth getting an intercooler from a breaker, which you may be able to get pressure tested before swapping it out. Any leak after the turbo compressor in the intercooler or associated piping will cost you performance. A friend had a leaky hose connecting to the intercooler on an XUD 1.9 406 and there was no evidence of the turbo in action at all. Quote
podpeeze Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Nice one randombloke! I'll get on it. CheersJon  Quote
podpeeze Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 Just for info purposes I've spent a small fortune on the estate and also got to the bottom of the lack of power. Two problems were found, although the dealer wasn't sure which was contributing more. The main problem was the failure of the air mass meter. (£85 to replace) the other problem was faulty wiring to the 'EGR' (whatever that is:). They pressure tested the intercooler and it was fine.So the car now pulls correctly from cold and I'm well impressed with the livelyness of the engine now. Makes me realise I was loosing quite a lot of power in general - economy is much better now. So if anyone's suffering from lack of power issues these might be worth a try. Jon  Quote
Randombloke Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 The main problem was the failure of the air mass meter. It's a valve that controls this, they are know for causing hassle on the HDi engine. Quote
