Last year my C5 got an advisory - "Hand brake cables deteriorated."   Eventually I got around to looking at them.   Couldn't see a thing wrong with them.   Maybe a few scratches on the thick protector that slides along the outer cable..    To keep the MOT happy, I covered all the exposed cable in heat shrink so it ended up looking new.   I confidently took the car for MOT last week.   I couldn't believe it when the guy told me he'd renewed the advisory.   According to him the outer cable was breaking away from the guide tube.

Today I've had the wheel off to have a look.   What he's looking at is the protector that's moved to the top of the outer cable.

MOT testers - don't you just love em? My car failed this week on a damaged wheel - the damage was done in 2008 and has never raised an eyebrow before! So I'm running around getting it repaired now - new wheel is a lengthy special order from France

Such is life..

These are what I've got on my C5.   The wheel I use as a spare is a matching alloy which I bought off ebay with a nearly new tyre - all for £55.   The only trouble is that when I put it on the car, the pressure monitoring system throws a wobbly and reports a fault.

Yes - I got new cables and tubes when I saw the advisory but decided the fitted ones were ok.   I've put the new ones in store for the future.
