Johndouglas Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Last year my C5 got an advisory - "Hand brake cables deteriorated." Eventually I got around to looking at them. Couldn't see a thing wrong with them. Maybe a few scratches on the thick protector that slides along the outer cable.. To keep the MOT happy, I covered all the exposed cable in heat shrink so it ended up looking new. I confidently took the car for MOT last week. I couldn't believe it when the guy told me he'd renewed the advisory. According to him the outer cable was breaking away from the guide tube. Today I've had the wheel off to have a look. What he's looking at is the protector that's moved to the top of the outer cable. Quote
coastline taxis Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 quick tip if your cable has cracked or deteriated then cover them in copperslip as the tester isnt aloud to remove it and cant see the cable. Same with suspension and brake pipes Quote
Johndouglas Posted May 16, 2013 Author Posted May 16, 2013 By next year I'll move the protective tube to a more central position. Then he won't see a problem. Quote
seefive Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 MOT testers - don't you just love em? My car failed this week on a damaged wheel - the damage was done in 2008 and has never raised an eyebrow before! So I'm running around getting it repaired now - new wheel is a lengthy special order from France Such is life.. Quote
coastline taxis Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 What type of wheel is it as weve got a few lying around Quote
seefive Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 It's a 215 16 inch 8 spoker - the type fitted to mk 2 exclusivesThanks http://i.ebayimg.com/t/CITROEN-C5-ALLOY-WHEELS-X-4-215-x-55-x-16-GOOD-TYRES-/00/s/NzIwWDk2MA==/z/6Y0AAOxydkZRjQ4d/$T2eC16V,!)QE9s3HFe6sBRjQ4cp,nw~~60_35.JPG Quote
Johndouglas Posted May 16, 2013 Author Posted May 16, 2013 It's a 215 16 inch 8 spoker - the type fitted to mk 2 exclusives These are what I've got on my C5. The wheel I use as a spare is a matching alloy which I bought off ebay with a nearly new tyre - all for £55. The only trouble is that when I put it on the car, the pressure monitoring system throws a wobbly and reports a fault. Quote
coastline taxis Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 sorry we got steels and a couple of vtrs Quote
DaveHerns Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 John , didn't you buy new handbrake cable guides last year ? Mine's up for an MOT and I think I may face the same problem Quote
Johndouglas Posted May 19, 2013 Author Posted May 19, 2013 Yes - I got new cables and tubes when I saw the advisory but decided the fitted ones were ok. I've put the new ones in store for the future. Quote
DaveHerns Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 MIne went through the MOT this week with just an advisory for a tyre which I knew about Quote
