Hi folks

This is my first posting to the forum and am looking for some guidance. I have never owned a Citroen, but had use of a C5 deisel estate car 07 reg for a short period a few years back and loved it - comfortable, spacious, smooth and economical (couldn't believe it only had a 1.6 engine in it!) and I have thought that Citroens in recent years have really had very welcoming interiors.

Anyway, at the moment kind of looking for a kind of third car ( not desperate, but my 19 year old son seems to have taken over possession of my daily driver!) and spotted this one which is local to me (my days for tramping all over the country looking at cars are now long gone - and don't want to spend a fortune), and would appreciate comments of forum members on the "overfilling with oil aspect" before I think about it too seriously.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum.

You need to ask if the engine has run on the oil - a diesel runaway, so it may have ran at high revs and had to be stopped using the clutch - but it is an auto so not sure how that would be done. It is unusual for a garage to sell a car like this, I thought they still had to provide a guarantee. The smoking may be due to engine damage and not just oil in the exhaust. Also there may be oil seal leaks.

For a start this particular car doesn't look all that good.   Nearly every panel has scuffs and bruises.   Also it needs a new boot lid.

That would be enough to put me off, but then the facts don't ring true either.     The vehicle is a 2003 model, they say it's been serviced by them since 2004 when the previous owner bought it.   So why does the book shows three previous owners.   All that together with the unknown condition of the engine, I'd be for leaving it.

Hi guys thanks for the replies, which have been very helpful - think I will take the advice given and leave it alone - not too bothered about the bodywork issues, but don't really want to be getting into engine/cat difficulties. Shame really - was getting to quite like the idea of the C5 as a runabout, but as Parkesie says there are bound to be others around which would be a better proposition, will just need to keep 'em peeled!

Cheers

If you look on autotrader there are many C5s for sale that will not cost alot to buy/do any possible repairs to get it up to standard. Also, unless you need an automatic, it is best to stick with a manual gearbox - better fuel economy but no high costs to repair/replace. C5s usually have good bodywork and it is unusual to see a tatty old one so why settle for anything less. I would be reluctant to buy  a car on ebay and would always want to see it try it out first.
