I've searched the forum using the search function and not found an article on how to get at the particulate filter. My C5 mk1 2.2 diesel needs its DPF replacing or removing and looking at the system under the car, I see 3 very rusty nuts holding the DPF body and CAT together (probably will need to use a nut splitter to remove these as the flats on the nuts have totally gone) and rusty nuts holding the exhaust system brackets to the car. The joint between the rear of the DPF and the remainder of the exhaust also looks very rusty and would probably not part too easily.

Can someone advise me as to what is the easiest way to get at the DPF? (I'm a pretty good DIYer but not into welding)

Thanks for any help.

If your filter box is similar to mine the filter and the cat are held together with four bolts.   The unit is joined into the exhaust system by a flanged joint at each end with the usual two-part clip around each flange.   If the four bolts are rounded they could easily be removed with an angle grinder - likewise the flange clips - all to be replaced by new bolts and clips.   There's not much room under there, so you'd probably find it easier to remove the rear box and lower the exhaust pipe.

Just a reminder to use axle stands if you go under the car. If you catch one of the height adjusters (which are not that far from the exhaust) the car can drop to a very low level.

If you are going to remove the DPF (or knock it through/drill a big hole through it), you will also need the ecu software modifying to remove references to the DPF system. I think I read on here somebody had washed their filter and reused it so could be worth checking as another option.
