05 c5 vtr 138 hdi 105000 miles new dmf fitted 6mths ago

        hi all,

This problem started  about 6 weeks ago, driving along you would hear a bong, service light on and warning on dash indicating "CHARGING OR BATTERY FAULT" The car still drove ok.Got home central locking won,t work.

This happened for a couple of weeks same routine.Have had lexia connected it reported  "LOW VOLTAGE TO BS"I,(that could have been caused by the car standing a couple of days then messing about with it), the battery is about 8 months old has good voltage 12.6 or so and 14.4 charging.

Other main thing that came up on the lexia was "CAN MUTE"

Iv'e done lots of tests, drop voltage and such to cut a long story short what's happening now is no ignition lights no power on side or headlights, won,t turn over.

thanks in advance.

ok, went out to the car this morning pressed the remote to take the alarm off(no locking remember) heard the the door locks operate, put key in ignition, got dash lights and started straight up.

Now most people may have been pleased by this, but when you've done nothing whatsoever to the car it's a sickener for me.

So anyway took it into town switched it off (riskey) it started back up,on the way home heard a bong displayed BATTERY OR CHARGING FAULT got home, disconnected the battery(don't worry the proper way) and cleaned 6 earths in the engine bay reconnected(as per proceedure).

now just waiting for further developments.

Ok here's an update on this fault.

Mostly behaving itself at the moment then without warning or operating anything comes up with "BATTERY OR CHARGING FAULT" then sevice light comes on as before,it will eventually go off but it has to stay off before switching off or it won't lock.

Also other things that always happen is no rear screen wiper and no heater blower, although it does indicate the fan is working on the display screen.Everything else seems to work fine.

Will try and find other earths to clean up.

Later.

It may be worth measuring the voltage all the time when running to see what it is when the fault occurs - you could plug something into the cigarette lighter socket and connect a meter to it. Possibly the battery is faulty and being only 8 months old would still be under guarantee. You could check the wiring/connections between the alternator and battery for damage/poor connections - it may get hot at a damaged section, particularly when there are a lot of things switched on such as all the lights, rear screen heater - also with these on check the voltage to see if the alternator keeps up.

For the rear screen wiper you could check the wiring where it goes between the body and hatch door in case it is damaged or remove the door card to check for 12 volts at the motor. The heater blower could be the resistor pack that controls the different speeds needs replacing.

I thank you for that paul.h

Other things i have noticed when the car was completely dead before, with the many battery disconnections/connections i did,if you removed the shunt fuse in the bsi and put it in the parking slot(ie moved it to the left) when you turned on the ignition the windscreen wipers would operate once and the engine would crank but not start.

Also connecting the battery (shunt fuse in normal position) sometimes the engine would crank but not start, although if you puased for about a minuite and listened you could hear the bsi click after this it would start.

When the battery in our C5 has been flat, on trying to start the engine odd things would happen such as the wipers moving and the lights coming on but there would not be enough to spin the engine fast enough for it to start. Once the battery had been charged up off the car these things did not happen once connected back up.

In the future, if you are only going to disconnect the battery and do not need to do a bsi reset procedure, in the Technical section under the Common Problems post there is a procedure that has worked for me without causing other electrical problems. If doing a jump start there is also a procedure for that to help prevent bsi/ecu problems (care of coastline taxis).

Thanks for all your replies,

I have written in earlier post that i always follow the battery disconnect/reconnect procedure.

Got another question to ask the forum but i'll open a new thread, don't want to go off subject too much.

Hi all,

It's been a while since i last posted. Still had the same problems(all earths clean)even put car into auto electricians for diagnosis,it was in there all day and it never showed any faults at all so couldn't be tested.

After that the faults eventually came back ie service light on battery or charging fault resulting in no door locking, no heater blower and ultumately no start.

So bit the bullet and sent the bsi off to BBA Reman they accidentley wiped it so they sent me a virginised reconditioned one, booked it into local citroen dealer for software download(BBA are paying btw)dealer said there was no configuration details on it.(they say there are over 600 different configs.for this model alone).

My son has exactly the same model so they took the config.off that,it came back windscreen wipers working all the time(won't turn off),it will lock but not remotely, suspension will not go up or down off the button and not showing outside temprature.

I rang BBA Reman today they said send the unit back they will check/virginise it again or i can buy another unit from citroen(£356 inc vat).

Ok went to local citroen garage again they would love to sell me one but it will be a virginised unit so may be back to square one, also saw a bsi+engine ecu keys barrel etc.on e bay for my model,so it's decision time.

Any thoughts/past experience anyone
