Ok hope someone can help have some issues with a 2009 2.0 hdi dispatch van

The engine went bang dropped a valve on no.3 so I sourced a engine from the breakers put it in started up with original fuel lines wiring harness etc has got new turbo on and new starter. When the van is running it runs fine when it's been running it starts fine. But leave it over night and it will not start literally an hour with jump leads and consistent cranking to get it going. So have tried the following

Checked timing ok

Checked for air locks ok

Changed starter motor ok

Changed battery ok

Checked inlet side

Checked exhaust for blockage ok

Changed cam shaft position sensor ok

Changed crank shaft position sensor ok

Changed filter housing ok

Heater plugs ok

Has anybody got any ideas ?

When it cranks it blows out smoke rich unbunburnt diesel smoke, eventually when it does start from cold it fires more and more each time till it will just about run then blows rich unburnt fuel smoke out and will eventually clear and run sweet. Leave it over night and its just the same again. It doesn't appear to have a electric lift pump for priming the fuel just a hand primer! Please any advice would be appreciated

Welcome to the forum.

You seem to have checked all the obvious things. How many miles had the replacement engine done, maybe a compression test may show if it is worn out. Are the glowplugs getting hot, are the fuel injectors leaking, do you need to prime the fuel filter in the morning ?

You have not mentioned if the engine management light comes on but ideally a diagnostic check or even a code reader that does live data may help - first you could check what it shows for the coolant temperature in case it is faulty.

The temperature sensor reads fine and I have tried swopping this over, the heater relay clicks in and the heater plugs glow red. The replacement engine is meant to have done 70,000

The bit I can't understand it runs perfect when it runs.

There is no diagnostic trouble codes.

Any more ideas would be appreciated
