paul.h Posted December 27, 2013 Posted December 27, 2013 This could turn in to a good topic. Here are the cars from my family with the general early theme of being cheap to buy and run: Vauxhall HC Viva 1159cc, Morris Marina 1300, Austin Maxi 1750, Fiat 127 900 and 1050, Austin Ambassador 1700, Datsun Cherry 1300, Saab 900i 2.0, Vauxhall Astra 1300, Saab 9000 2.0t, Saab 9-5 2.3t, Rover 214, Nissan Primera 1.6, Citroens - Xsara Picasso 2.0 hdi Desire, 2008 C4 1.6 hdi vtr+, 2011 C4 1.6 hdi vtr+, 2004 C5 2.2 hdi vtr, 2007 C5 2.2 hdi vtx estate, 2003 C3 1.4 sx, 2010 C3 1.4 vtr 95. Before these, also a Casal moped, Honda cd 175. On the early ones I soon learnt how to patch up bodywork, rust being usual on cars until the 1990s once a few years old. The worst for rust was the Cherry and justified buying a mig welder. The Citroens have all been lower mileage/years and have been the most reliable - the Saabs the worst and most expensive for parts. john h Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 Out of all the cars I have owned since the 1960's only 2 stand out, the first being the Vauxhall 101 Estate, huge, comfortable, reliable, but consumed eventually by the dreaded rust-worm, then mediocre transport until I came upon the Xsara Picasso, what a motor, cant enthuse enough about it, big mistake by Citroen to discontinue, there is nothing in their line-up that fills the gap, the C3 pic is pants in my eyes, I have one but not for much longer. Quote
john h Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 The deed is done, I've off-loaded the c3 pic to my son, using his old Scenic as p/x, and got myself a c4 pic which although a year older is much pleasanter to drive, takes road humps in a gentler way that lets you stay in the seat, is that down to the longer wheelbase ?, ok I expect less to the gallon and dearer road tax but I do have more space and comfort. Jassyblue Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Ok. My first personal car, Mini City. Still remember the reg. UNV 839W. Bought her at auction for £850 - part ex her for Metro, got £820!After Metro, disasterous Escort, like all fords a genuine rust bucket!Next, Renault Clio, lovely little car, upgraded to a newer Clio.Next, Peugeot 306, my dad's car when he died. Due to head gasket going got Ford Ka, (see earlier about rust!)Next, another Clio from a very shady garage, although didn't realise it at the time. Problems, problems. Only thing to do was to go back to said shady garage to part ex for another, hopefully more reliable car. Unfortunately, got another lemon - Ford Fiesta (again see earlier about rust - and this time other major problems!)Now - A wonderful C3! Bought from a very reptuable garage so have total trust. Only had her for two weeks and she's 12 years old but am absolutely sold on Citroen. Always thought Renault were the bee's knees but now I know better! Quote

arm987 Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Good to see this started in 2013 so for first post 2015 here goes!Wish I could remember all and dates but will do my bestEarly cars were all company ownedAge 22 now 84,drove a variety of Ford escorts including a popular first one was without heater and windscreen washers, had a fairy liquid bottle filled with water whilst driving opened the window(wind up type) and squirted! And thought it was Christmas because I had the use of 4 wheels.Age about 25 new Company and had full use of at least 4 minor 1000s estate cars real rattle bangs but I loved them. Then 40000 miles was considered a cars life,if car was driven hard which mine was over total of Ireland. Also almost always had the top end de coked valves ground(who remembers those days). Got promotion and got big boys cars Ford estate cars can't remember names but one had fancy wood look sides, loved it. I think there were 2 of thes one a plain paint work no fancy woodwork look alike. Then oh joy a Ford Cortaina G T it went like an Express train and that's how I drove it. Poor thing it was written off in a smash. A further G T can't remember it's name not Cortina but a V4 engine. It was a Pig and had it shot as soon as soon as possible. Finished with Company's car a Ford estate and loved it. At around 40 became self employed and had to buy my own. First was a Triumph 2000 an old lady but it served me well and over a few years changed to another 2000 one was an auto. Loved it a real gentlemans car. In those days cars were easy to change I saw something in a garage, had a drive and went home with it. Had a Toyota Crown thought it was the most beautiful car I ever onedfelt like a God in it. Not a great car drove like a hurt pig but a looker. A Damiler V8 now that was a car. Petrol was cheap and m p g of little interest this car you did not hear much from the engine only a lovely gurgling sound. Cost a fortune in exhausts, they were always being damaged on security ramps much used in N I troubled times. Also had valve trouble, some fun stripping down a V6.A variety of Toyotas inc an MR2 only kept it a few weeks concluded I would either kill mysef or someone else without doubt loose licence. Next a Toyota normal salon can't remember name and indeed a variety of Huyandis , Vauxalls then a trusty Citeron Picasso 1.6d this in 2007 still have it driven by my son, battered and worn but drives as good as new a real family hack. Inbetween C4s a Ford B max the one with sliding rear door, never really loved it my heart is really with Citeron (forgot I had had 2 C5s loved them and would love one of the latest just to sit in one is a temptation, get the behind me Satin!). Then In 2014 an almost new Picasso C4 beautiful red joy of my heart makes me feel good even just to look at is, something tells me this will be my last, well at least at least till I spot something that takes my fancy. This is first and no doubt the last time I have gone down memory lane re cars, list is not complete but it will do. arm987 Quote

Porsche430 Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 I passed my driving test at 17, all the way back in 1998, and shared my Dad's 1994 Peugeot 405 which I think had a 1.9L Diesel engine. Bought my first car at 20 which was, believe it or not, a Glacier White 2000 Vauxhall Vectra Envoy, 1.6 Petrol engine. It was an ex-demonstrator and I got it a around 9 months old with 6000-ish miles on the clocks. Owned it for 8 years and covered 130,000-odd miles in it before it started to cost me more money in repairs than it was worth. In 2008, I had a short spell with a Citroen C2 I bought from a customer. I was servicing it when I noticed a For Sale sticker in the window and bought it from him when he came in to collect the car, and he paid for the service! The car was somewhat modified with a lovely, sporty exhaust system, lowered suspension and 18" wheels. I owned the car for 2 years as, again, it started to cost me more money to run than it was worth and sold it on. I then bought a 2006 Citroen C4 Coupe with the TU5 petrol engine. This car, however, is starting to get old and like all modern Citroen's, the don't last long. Therefore, I recently placed an order for a brand new Citroen C4 Cactus PureDrive 1.2i Turbo which is ready to be delivered but because the dealership didn't expect to have it completed before March, I agreed to wait until the 15-reg was out and therefore I need to wait until March before I can have it! Oh well, more time to get excited! Quote

KeithE Posted July 30, 2016 Posted July 30, 2016 My first car was a mk1 Cortina which I paid £75 for before is passed my test.I had a Honda N350 and a N600 for a while, trying to make 1 out of 2.A Datsun 260C which had a clockwork timer on the heated rear window switch so you couldn't leave it on and fibre optic rear light monitors on the rear parcel shelf.A ford granada V4, a couple of Marinas, both of them had the lever arms replaced with telescopic dampers and had the most comfortable rear seats of any car I've ever been in.Then there was a lime green Avenger bought at auction with a leaking water pump which took no time to replace. It also had electronic ignition, there was an interruptor plate inside the distributor which I managed to damage. But a new one was available from a local motor factors for coppers and took ten minutes to fit.I bought a two year old Nova from my mother, one of the early ones, two door, Y reg, any colour you like, so long as it was red or brown and the boot was massive. The camshaft started to wear at about 75000 miles(I was doing high mileages in those days) so I got an engine from a write off for £150, 8000 miles and almost as cheap as doing the camshaft.Almost ran it into the ground then bought an F reg Nissan Sunny at 3 yo because my wife talked me into it as she'd just passed her test in one. I kept it for about six months and part ex'd it for a Ford Orion encore which was half incched from my drive.I bought a three year old Cavalier with the insurance money and had it for about six years. Wth only 68000 miles on the clock I gave it to my eldest son to part exchange against a car he wanted.I was without a car of my own for a short while until I put my wife's Escort estate in as part ex for a Mazda 6 for me.I swapped the Mazda for a Nissan Xtrail to tow the caravan we bought. Then I let my wife talk me into buying a people carrier, so I bought a Kia Sedona, the first automatic I've had since the Datsun. The Kia went two days ago and I've now got an eight year old C5.Another automatic. The Datsun was auto because that's what was fitted when I bought it used. The Kia was bought because it was auto and the Citroen was bought because I was looking for a car with a Teflon gearbox. Quote
