Citroen's procedures show a 3 leg puller to pull off the hub and then to pull off the inner bearing shell which may be left behind on the axle. Then they show a guide tool to push the hub inner bearing/hub unit back on to the axle - however, you may not need this if the axle is cleaned up and greased a bit but if so a tube may do against the inner bearing shell and tapped with a hammer. The hub nut is tightened to 380 Nm and then locked - most torque wrenches do not go this high so it will be tight to undo (best done with all 4 wheels on the ground and the handbrake and brakes on - so the nut should be slackened early on in the job before touching the brakes, despite what is suggested in the Citroen procedure) and then to do up you may need to hire or buy a high range wrench. The hub nut might need a 28 mm socket but I am not sure, but it must be replaced since it is peened over to lock in place so you can check the size of the new one (possibly dealer only supply). The hub bearing cap also will need replacing (possibly dealer only supply) since to remove it it probably will get damaged. The caliper retaining bolts might need a torx bit (do not know the size) and the separate caliper removal procedures suggest these should be renewed.

The Citroen procedure is below with some comments in italics:

2. Removing
Place the vehicle on a lift with rear wheels suspended (just jack up the relevant corner and use an axle stand, chock the other rear wheel, remove the wheel, remove the hub bearing cap, refit the wheel if it has a hole in the middle, lower the car back down, slacken the hub nut, then jack up again, use an axle stand, chock the other rear wheel and remove the wheel).
Remove :
  • The rear wheel
  • The brake caliper (partly) (undo the caliper bracket bolts and move the caliper to one side. It may need the handbrake cable disconnecting)
  • The brake disc
  • The protection cap from the hub
  • The hub nut
Remove the rear bearing-hub assembly using a 3 leg puller.

Remove the bearing cage left on the axle using the puller.

3. Refitting
ESSENTIAL : The bearing-hub is a single assembly and must therefore be totally replaced after removal.
Clean the stub axle before refitting.

Screw the guide sleeve tool onto the stub axle.
Fit a new hub bearing to the guide sleeve and tighten the tool thrust ring until the hub bearing is against its stop.
Remove the tools.

Fit a new hub nut , Face and threads greased.
Tighten the nut to 380 Nm Lock the nut (it may need the wheel fitting and the car lowering to the ground at this high torque. Lock the nut by peening over into the axle cut out).

Refit :

A new cap

The brake disc (clean its hub contact face to make sure it seats flat and ideally the disc runout should be checked)

The brake caliper

The rear wheel

Tightening torques :

  • Wheel bolts : 100 Nm
  • Hub nut : 380 Nm
  • Brake disc fixing screw : 15 Nm
  • Screw for fixing brake caliper : 95 Nm

Hi to all     Here is an update as promised I have completed the replacement of the O/S rear wheel bearing on my 2004 C8 and I want to pass on a few tips for anyone else thinking of doing the same job
1/  The first thing is the size of the socket required to remove the hub nut It is a massive 36mm
2/  I appplied some heat to the nut whilst the car was still on the ground with H/Brake applied I used a plumbers blow torch
I used a 4ft steel tube on my socket power bar and no problem off It came
Jack up the car remove road wheel and you are good to go   Remember axle stand
Remove the caliper as one unit no need to disconnect H/brake cable
3/  Lift off the disc
4/  Using a 3 legged puller remove the wheel hub
5/  You will find that It leaves on the shaft the inner bearing race,  Citroen say using a puller remove the bearing not quite            that easy no way can you use a puller ( not enough lip on the bearing)  I managed by first removing the disc dust cover
3 small bolts then heated up the bearing race and from under the car using a good heavy punch and lump hammer the
bearing was moved far enough to continue using the 3 legged puller
6/  After bearing removal clean up the stub axle with fine emery paper
7/  I used the 36mm socket as a drift to start the new hub onto the stub axle as soon as the treads became visible I used the
old nut to push the hub fully home.
8/  Replace all parts in reverse order,  Finally torque hub nut when car is back on ground remembering to peen the nut fit
dust cover and thats It job done.

   Regards to all     Jon

Thankyou for the feedback.

Did you manage to get a torque wrench to do 380 Nm, only asking since I need to do the rear brakes on a C3 and the hub nut is 300 Nm which is above the range of my torque wrench ?

Hi I managed to borrow a torque wrench from a friend he remained with me while I used it and then It went back to his works chop chop he was not really allowed to remove tools from the workshop so It was a bit hush hush and I now owe him big time,   Most plant hire companys have torque wrenches for
hire but the local one here didnt have one available at the time I wanted to do the job
