Larkspeed Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 (edited) I have a 1998 Xsara 1.8 16v hatchback. I have a friend coming over from the UK to visit for a couple of weeks and he is in a wheelchair. Can anyone tell me if a standard wheelchair fits in the back of a Xsara without putting the seats down. I have to pick him up from the airport with his chair but all seats will be in use so it has to fit in the back or I have to come up with a different car to collect him. I don't know anyone else in a wheelchair so I have no way to check. Edited February 20, 2014 by Larkspeed Quote
paul.h Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Welcome to the forum. I would ask your friend to measure the wheelchair and then you could see if it will fit. Quote
Larkspeed Posted February 20, 2014 Author Posted February 20, 2014 I would but he is not capable of doing much once he is out of the chair, he is going to see if he can find out the folded size but I just figured maybe someone on here had tried to put a wheelchair in one and could of told me if it fit or not. Much less hassle that way. Quote
paul.h Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 An internet search came up with this which may help a bit https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=standard+wheelchair+dimensions&hl=en-GB&rlz=1T4DKUK_enGB242GB242&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=7BsGU-GUJemv7AaWj4HICQ&ved=0CEoQsAQ&biw=1193&bih=822 Perhaps your friend could measure the height, depth and width of the chair whilst still using it and maybe guess how much the width reduces when folded. Johndouglas Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 I have a wheelchair which my wife used to use and it definitely fits into my daughter's Xsara. But some chairs fold more compactly than others. I know with mine the seat removes then folds in the centre bringing the wheels closer together. The wheels are standard 26" bike wheels. At the same time the handle bars fold and drop down with the footrests being removed and carried separately. Can't be more help since at the moment I and the wheelchair are not in the same place. Larkspeed Posted February 20, 2014 Author Posted February 20, 2014 Thanks that's exactly what I wanted to know, he has already told me that the bars fold down and the foot rests come off so should be no problem then :) Quote
