maverick11 Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 HelloI have a 08 plate C4 1.6HDI Catchet. Ive had it for 6 months, and in the last 2 weeks, I have noticed that the engine sounds very tappity. When the car has warmed up about 10 mins later it quietens down. As I am new to citroen diesels, please could someone let me know what may be causing this?RegardsPat Quote
paul.h Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Welcome to the forum. Have a look at this post and the link to another one in case it helps. The original poster with the petrol engine has not been back so we do not know what happened and if it was sorted. http://www.citroen-owners-club.co.uk/citroen/topic/20973-c4-vtr-16-petrol-sounds-like-engine-tapping/ Quote

maverick11 Posted May 13, 2014 Author Posted May 13, 2014 Hello,Thank you for all your help. I will try and book my car into the garage tomorrow. Is it ok still to drive it?RegardsPat Quote
coastline taxis Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 As long as your not doing a 600 mile round trip youl be ok. google 1.6hdi turbo problems and read. If you treat them with total respect regarding oil changes and use the correct stuff itl be ok. Im not a big fan of the 1.6 but over the last couple of months weve had a few in with 150 to 190k on them and all with the original turbo on them. After talking to the owners it seems that the thing they have in common is they all go to the dealers for there service bits. A lot of car discount shops dont realise that its a special oil for the 1.6 and give the wrong stuff out. So make a point of going to the dealers Quote
maverick11 Posted May 14, 2014 Author Posted May 14, 2014 Thank you again, I have booked my car in for a oil filter changer, flush and oil at ATS for £55 tomorrow. They tell me they are using shell oil 10/40w.RegardsPat Quote
paul.h Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Rather than using an independant garage for your servicing/oil change you would be better using a Citroen one. When you mention the noise they may also provide additional advice and will be more familiar with your engine. My Citroen dealer does an oil/filter change service for £80 to £90 which includes extra checks than just the oil change. If you check your car maintenance book it will list the oil for your car. The Shell oil may well be suitable (you need to check its spec) but in the book with our 2007 C5 for diesels it lists Total oils quartz 7000 10W-40 or 9000 5W-40 both ACEA A3 / B3 but if your car has an exhaust particulate filter (dpf) then it should be a low saps oil Total INEO ECS 5W-30 to ACEA C2. The 7000 may be a semi synthetic and the other 2 full synthetic. Make sure the oil is drained rather than sucked out. Quote
maverick11 Posted May 14, 2014 Author Posted May 14, 2014 Hello,I cant afford a main dealer, as ive just lost my job. Ats have my reg number and checked on the shell website to get the correct oil. I will make sure they drain the oil properly..RegardsPat Quote
coastline taxis Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 its got to be low ash and thats what a 1.6 has to have phone citroen up and theyl tell you what oil you have to put in. You could do the oil change yourself as its really straight forward and youl get advice of this site if you want to give it a go. Dont take any chances it should be flushed aswell Quote
maverick11 Posted May 15, 2014 Author Posted May 15, 2014 Oil change done, was flushed. Ats mechanic, reckons it was not a tappity sound, and reckons its an exhaust gasket instead. Anyone else heard of this problem?RegardsPat Quote
maverick11 Posted May 15, 2014 Author Posted May 15, 2014 Car going to a citroen specialist tomorrow, says a common problem is inlet valves. This makes sense as when I switch on heater I can smell diesel a bit. The mechanic was very helpful at ATS, RegardsPat Quote
coastline taxis Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 The common fault on the 1.6 is the injector seals leaking. Quote
maverick11 Posted May 16, 2014 Author Posted May 16, 2014 Yes thats what the garage said, is this costly to fix?RegardsPat Quote
