Archer Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 I have just bought a 2003 C5 Exclusive 2.2Hdi.Can anyone advise on how to get the trip computer to work?I have read posts about replacing parts in the arm, but would this solve my problem if I can't even skip through the options by pressing the buttons on the display?I get nothing at all. Also, where is the relay for the computer located?Any help would be appreciated. coastline taxis Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 The trip computer is on the dashboard and not controled by the wiper stalk. its controlled by the button on the clock binicle. or are you refering the the display above the stereo that tells you mpg and miles to empty Quote
Archer Posted June 16, 2014 Author Posted June 16, 2014 Yes, the display above the stereo - sorry I am a complete novice! Can't get it to display anything but time, date etc. Quote
paul.h Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Does pushing the button on the end of the wiper stalk do anything - it should let you scroll through the different displays and if held in will reset to zero miles. Quote
coastline taxis Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Dont worry about being a novice we all have to start somewhere. welcome to the forum and ask as many questions as you like. Have you got a handbook for your car Quote
Archer Posted June 17, 2014 Author Posted June 17, 2014 Pushing the end of the wiper stalk does nothing, and pushing the buttons on the display does nothing.I have the handbook and this is what it tells me to do - could it be the relay, and if so where would I find it.I don't want to try taking the stalk apart (I have found instructions for this) when it would appear that if it was only the switch in the stalk then I should still be able to toggle the display using the buttons there? paul.h Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 Just a thought, has the previous owner put a replacement screen in since ones from lower models do not all have the trip computer. Are you able to ask the previous owner when it stopped working ? Quote
paul.h Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 If it still has a warranty, then I would get in touch with the dealer. A replacement screen will not be much (if that is what it needs) but it is better if the dealer pays for it. Used ones on ebay are less than £50. If it is the wiper stalk that is at fault, the complete unit under the steering wheel has to be replaced including the lighting stalk and on ebay these are up to £150 for new and a lot less for used ones - but a replacement one may need the steering angle sensor calibrating at a dealer. Archer Posted June 18, 2014 Author Posted June 18, 2014 Took the stalk apart as described on this site, and found that part of the copper connection ring had come away.Welded it back on and hey presto - it's working. That copper ring is very flimsy, and this seems to be a common fault. Very fiddly soldering job! Quote
paul.h Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 So, all sorted, now you can enjoy your car and hopefully there will be no more problems. I have now included this on the C5 Common Problems post with a link to the repair post. Quote
