pazvtrplus Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 (edited) Hi, im new to citroen cars and need a little advise... Citroen C4 VTR+ 2005 Coupe1.6 PETROL 67500 Miles Everything works great... However when driving, whether hot or cold engine something is making a whining sound! It does it whether moving or just revving the engine the whining goes up and down along with the engine rev speed, a bit like a belt spinning faster and slower. Reminds me of an old Austin Metro!!!! Can't really hear it inside the car, should it be something I should be worried about? or is it a sound these engines make? Edited January 22, 2015 by pazvtrplus Quote
Johndouglas Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 Could be the auxiliary belt or maybe the alternator pulley. Quote
paul.h Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 You should have a listen with the bonnet up and somebody revving the engine to help locate it. As well as the aux belt or alternator pulley, it could be a pulley on the aux or timing belts. Also I suspect your car is due for the timing belt/tensioner/any pulleys/water pump replacing if not already done - Citroen usually specify a mileage or 10 years if sooner. If it is a timing belt tensioner/pulley/water pump then I would have it done asap since if it fails then the belt could fail and ruin the engine. Quote
pazvtrplus Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 thanks, I had a listen but I cant seem to pin point where its coming from, although its definitely in the area of the cambelt/altenator i'll get a mechanic to sort it out soon, need some money first! Quote
paul.h Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 If you do go for a new timing belt, even if money is tight, make sure all the other parts (tensioner, pulleys, water pump) are replaced. A neighbour recently had a belt replaced on a Renault but not all the other bits due to the extra cost - however, the new belt failed about 4 days later and they are now in dispute with the garage over who will pay for the new engine. Edited 12/2/2015.The neigbour got the story wrong a bit wrong - the husband gave me the correct details after it had been fixed. They had the alternator drive belt replaced initially and then a few days later the timing belt snapped so the 2 may not have been related to each other. The engine was repaired by rebuilding the cylinder head. Quote
