Hi, im new to citroen cars and need a little advise...

Citroen C4 VTR+ 2005 Coupe

1.6 PETROL 67500 Miles

Everything works great... However when driving, whether hot or cold engine something is making a whining sound!

It does it whether moving or just revving the engine the whining goes up and down along with the engine rev speed, a bit like a belt spinning faster and slower. Reminds me of an old Austin Metro!!!!

Can't really hear it inside the car, should it be something I should be worried about? or is it a sound these engines make?

You should have a listen with the bonnet up and somebody revving the engine to help locate it. As well as the aux belt or alternator pulley, it could be a pulley on the aux or timing belts. Also I suspect your car is due for the timing belt/tensioner/any pulleys/water pump replacing if not already done - Citroen usually specify a mileage or 10 years if sooner.

If it is a timing belt tensioner/pulley/water pump then I would have it done asap since if it fails then the belt could fail and ruin the engine.

thanks, I had a listen but I cant seem to pin point where its coming from, although its definitely in the area of the cambelt/altenator

i'll get a mechanic to sort it out soon, need some money first!

If you do go for a new timing belt, even if money is tight, make sure all the other parts (tensioner, pulleys, water pump) are replaced. A neighbour recently had a belt replaced on a Renault but not all the other bits due to the extra cost - however, the new belt failed about 4 days later and they are now in dispute with the garage over who will pay for the new engine.

The neigbour got the story wrong a bit wrong - the husband gave me the correct details after it had been fixed. They had the alternator drive belt replaced initially and then a few days later the timing belt snapped so the 2 may not have been related to each other. The engine was repaired by rebuilding the cylinder head.
