M0JFK Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 (edited) Any pointer here to save me time would be gratefully accepted. Noticed on my C5 that when I go over speed ramps on the downward motion at the back (after going over the ramp) I get a knock that feels like its central or sometimes to the off side (drivers side rear) like a sound when you hit a grid cover that is loose in the road type of sound. Definitely a metal to metal sound...any rebound bushes worn? Any dreaded shocks gone? anything to do with drop links on them on the rear? Any ideas folks...sometimes it does it not long after coming around a bend just a sudden DING or metal to metal contact sound...strange one I know but if someone on here has had the same type of trouble and can offer a quick fix for me on where to look I would be over the moon. Thanks from Peter (M0JFK) PS Does not do it going along in a straight line and hitting pot holes in the road. Only after going over speed bumps and sometimes just straightening up from cornering. PPS The car go's up and down ok and is level (no sunken sides) and it does not appear to drop over night to a lower level when settled if you get my drift? Citroen C5 Mk 1 2002 2.2 hdi exclusive (75k on clocks) just in case something is known to go at that kind of mileage. Edited February 24, 2015 by M0JFK Quote
coastline taxis Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 rear trailing arm bearings gone Quote
M0JFK Posted February 24, 2015 Author Posted February 24, 2015 Well ding dang do. What do you reckon coastline taxis... bite the bullet and buy the two set's and do both sides or just one? Is this job a t~#t to do? Got the tools and the time but would be nice if the job was relatively easy...hoping it can all be done sat on me asp just at the side of the wheel. Don't fancy having to crawl under another car again it almost killed me off last time doing the exhaust flexi pipe on the Izzy trooper. Quote
paul.h Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 You could also check if the rear wheels are pointing in a bit at the top which can indicate the bearings are gone, plus maybe bad tyre wear at the back. Have a look in the boot also in the spare wheel well in case it is something rattling around. You may also try wd40 or some oil where the strut knuckle contacts the suspension arm. However, coastline is our C5 expert but these are simple things to eliminate. Quote
Parkesie Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 If you can get the car over a pit ideally or on axle stands would do get under it and give suspension and wheels etc a good shake. Dont go under the car without stands it may actually try to kill you. Alternatively anyone in the boot we should know about? Quote
PICASSOCONVERT Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Just a note picking up on paul.h's rear tyre wear comment. I have found that the rear tyres on both my early C5's (2001 and current 2003) wear slightly unevenly and understood this was a feature of these early models? David Quote
M0JFK Posted February 26, 2015 Author Posted February 26, 2015 Well I did have a quick look after reading in another forum about the rear axle/chassis on these twisted on this year making the tyres at the rear wear unevenly at the back so I ran out and checked them...all appears to be ok but they could be relatively new tyres put on prior to sale from the garage where I bought it. Maybe need more mileage on them before wear shows up or maybe I am one of the lucky ones not prone to this problem yet... hopefully. Bought two sets of rear trailing arm bushes so I will do the other side if and when that kicks off clanging and a banging. Why we are on servicing what are the timing belts like on these to do...had a brief look down the side and it does not look like you can get your hand in let alone a spanner to remove the timing belt cover...thinking maybe let Citroen do it what say you folks? Thanks for the help and info folks so far, I will look at the bearing on the back and do a bit of monkey p1.s here and there on it see if it helps. Quote
M0JFK Posted February 26, 2015 Author Posted February 26, 2015 By the way if you ever need trailing arm bush kit they are cheaper at eurocarcare at £27 quid a pop per side that's with the VAT too. Cheaper than ebuygum. Quote
coastline taxis Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 your getting the bearings way cheaper than we can. could you pm there phone no please. timming belts are a piece of p155 too do. once you take the mounting off the enginge will go wherever you want to put it. high pressure pump dosnt need timing up so you only have 2 pulleys to mark/pin up Quote
M0JFK Posted March 3, 2015 Author Posted March 3, 2015 (edited) Coastline Taxis PM sent but here is the info for everyone else below. www.eurocarcare.net Tel: 044 (0) 132 257401 and 2 Kits are £ 23.88p a side and that also includes the VAT. British company specialise in French and Italian Parts Cost me with postage for both sides £55 that's the parts and postage 55 stump's. Kits are extremely good quality (should be RRP £75 a side according to their website) and all the bearings and parts are individually sealed/wrapped they are not just lumped together in a box and thrown out. M0JFK Posted March 3, 2015 Author Posted March 3, 2015 Be interesting to see if they do the timing belt kits too at eurocarcare...very reasonably priced parts but I cant see any kits available for the 2.2hdi on there. Does not mean they don't do them I suppose. Quote
paul.h Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 If you do the timing belt note that the mileage/time limits in the Citroen maintenance and warranty book are for Citroen parts. If you get them from another source and the parts are not identical and the same manufacturer, then it is possible future maintenance frequencies will be different - something you could check when getting prices. Some cars I have owned needed the timing belts replaced at 4 years or 36k miles, the extended frequencies of 10 years or maybe around 100k miles on Citroens must be based on the materials/quality/testing of the belts they use. So if you save a few pounds on the parts compared to Citroen, you may lose this by having to replace them in a few years or possibly risk engine damage. When I replaced the timing belt on our C3 my thoughts were that the possible savings were not worth the risk - example prices are now £43 from Eurocarparts for a Dayco belt and tensioner, at the end of 2011 the Citroen parts were £63. Quote
M0JFK Posted March 4, 2015 Author Posted March 4, 2015 It appears the timing kits available include the GATES belts and I have used these before on my Isuzu Trooper and appear to be good quality belts and often recommended by like minded individuals who do their own DIY mechanics. This alone gives me peace of mind if a GATES is used. But like you said Paul H you cant be to careful can you? Quote
