carlosjackal Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 hi, I have a problem. Changing the oil on the Xsara at the weekend, not paying any attention, and ended up dropping the transmission fluid. Unable to find anywhere on the net which shows how to check the level and how to top up, I ended up removing the battery box and air box. The only obvious top up bolt I could see was a large Torx Bolt. I removed this, filled back up with 3 litre of fluid, refitted. In hindsight, I think this bolt is a locking/pivot pin for the gear selector. I refitted it back into the hole, all appeared ok. Now there is no drive in any gear. and the gear selection is inconsistent. So, please keep the abuse and laughter to a minimum, as I have already heard it all from the wife. Also, I don't have the funds to get a mechanic to look at it, so was hoping it was just an ECU reset or something. cheers Quote
paul.h Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Welcome to the forum. In Citroen's workshop manual it has the warningCAUTION : Do not loosen the TORX screw ( 13) Risk of dropping the selector control inside the gearbox So it looks as if the gearbox will need taking apart to fix it. The correct filler plug has a square hole in it and is also on top of the gearbox. This manual does not have any info on repairing/dismantling the gearbox so I am unable to give any more help. Quote
carlosjackal Posted June 15, 2015 Author Posted June 15, 2015 Cheers Paul, When I took off the front panel, this selector is clearly exposed and the Torx Pin appears to simply fit back into the selector.I was wondering if this selector activates solenoids to change the gears, and if so, whether something needs resetting, either mechanically or electrically. coastline taxis Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 if its a al4 type box it must have the correct fluid and not the red fluid the discount shops provide. the oil must be at 80 degress to ge tthe right level. think i would be getn the car lifted to the citroen dealer and get them to refil the box correctly b4 you do proper damage Quote
carlosjackal Posted June 16, 2015 Author Posted June 16, 2015 Thanks, I had read about the correct fluid and I don't think that is what I replaced it with. Tell me, even with the incorrect fluid and levels, is it possible to get absolutely zero drive still? it would be reassuring to know either way. Quote
coastline taxis Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 yes as it wont have the same viscosity and wont throw the clutches out to engage drive Quote
