Welcome to the forum.

What year is your car and model and which engine does it have ? Does everything on the car work - lights, battery charging, air conditioning ? If your car does not have air conditioning then it could be a connector to the air con compressor which would be located below the alternator.

Hi there, the car is a c3 2003 model 1.4 16v. The air con works as does the heating and lights etc..I was at the scrap yard the other day and there said it's a loose spare wire that you have in most car - surely this can't be right

Yes - it might well be. Most car makers produce several versions within the range from a basic car up to a fully equipped version. But then they use the same wiring harness in all the versions. The connectors that are not required on the car are just left hanging.
