So as of late we've noticed our car is making alot of noise after each drive. On closer inspection I noticed that the large fan sitting on top of the radiator keeps turning, this sometimes as long as 5 minutes before finally stopping.

Its really making me suspicious because our car keeps doing this almost after every trip, even really short ones! It keeps draining battery and I don't want to show up at my car one day, only to find it has a dead battery because of it.

Does anyone know what could cause this issue? or has anyone any had similar experiences? I checked with my local garage, but the guy didn't find out what caused the issue.

I'm sure it is a malfunctioning of some sort because when we first purchased this beautiful car it never made such noises...

I have recorded the fan and dashboard parameters for anyone who's interested:

much appreciated,

The fan begins to work when it receives information from the engine management that the coolant temperature is rising. It's also busier when the aircon is working. For the fan to continue working for a while after the engine is switched off, especially after a long hard drive on a hot day, is normal. Then once the temperature is reduced, the fan cuts out. First of all you need to find out if the engine is in fact over-heating. Live data from a diagnostic meter is the most reliable figure. Normal running temperature should be around 85C. If the coolant temperature is at this figure or below, then you need to look at the temperature sensor or maybe the relays.

If the temp is higher, could it be the water pump or thermostat?

Off hand I am not sure on the C5 but on our C3 the engine fan starts at 96°C and stops once down to 94°C. So the normal running temperature could be up to 96°C before the fan starts. Recently this car and our C4 in the warmer weather have continued to run the engine fan for a few minutes after stopping the engine - I have checked live data on both and neither were overheating but it may have been related to using the air con.

Sorry about bumping this old post, but this problem just occured on my newly bought C5 2005 with the 1.8l.
My solution was to change the temprature sensor that feeds the fan with coolant temprature. Measured it after removal and it was giving me faulty and slow readings. THe new one was quick to react and gave the fan some ease :)

Im not an expert, but my guess is that the fan has a signal to run all the time. This is likely to prevent overheating. The only thing preventing the fan to run is the temp sensor and the signal is feeds. If it is fault then the wise thing to do is to let the fan run so you dont overheat :)
