markyh123 Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 Hi, Just looking for a bit advice, we have a problem with the C3 mainly on the larger type roundabouts with the tyres screeching. There is a slight bit play in the passenger front wheel, nothing on driver side. Had it at the garage today and they have diagnosed it had a faulty steering rack that needs replaced. I'm awaiting a price but sounds expensive. Does this sound like a faulty rack as I thought it would just be wheel bearings. Any help would be appreciated Cheers Mark Quote
coastline taxis Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 normally screeching when cornering is a sign that your tracking needs checking. But as with any fault on a car if your not sure or feel uncertain then take the car elswhere for a second opinion Quote
paul.h Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 You could check the tyres for uneven wear of the tread to indicate if the tracking is out - if out and the tyres pressures are always correct, then the inside or outside edges would be more worn than the rest of the tread. What make/model of tyres are they and are they winter or summer ones and what speed are you going on the roundabouts ? You could also try swapping the front and back tyres to see if this makes a difference if they are different makes. I can not imagine why a steering rack fault would cause the problem so depending on your tyre checks, you should go somewhere else. Quote
markyh123 Posted August 17, 2015 Author Posted August 17, 2015 Thanks for your replies, got a neighbour who knows about cars to check it out, straight away he said tyre pressures were wrong, in fact there were quite out, we put the correct pressure in and now no more screeching, he played about with the steering and as no knocking or clicking he says the rack is fine. Appreciate the replies and I will be sure not to visit that garage again. Cheers Mark Quote
paul.h Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 It is always nice when a fix has no cost. It may pay to buy a digital tyre pressure gauge if you do not have one since if you are using a pump one these are often not accurate. Having correct tyre pressures will maximise tyre life and fuel economy as well so should save some money. Quote
