shebeen Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 (edited) Hi, wondering could anybody help me, i have a c3 1.4 petrol 2003, it needed a head gasget as it was trowing oil into the water bottle and heating up, when the cap was taking of it would trow the gunk out the top of the botte, well i changed the gasget and let the car run for a bit thinking all was fine and when it was running a while it has started trowing water from the bottle now, there was a wee small bit of gunk in it but that was just the left over from before as we cleared the ststem as good as we could, if anybody could helf i would be greatfull as im about to go mad ;-) oh yes i have the thermostat took out as it was seized aswell plus i unscrewed the bleading hole and done no good Edited March 5, 2016 by shebeen Quote
Johndouglas Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Did you get the head checked to see if it was warped? It may need skimming. Did you use the correct torque and sequence for the head bolt tightening? I'm not familiar with your engine but maybe the bolts should have been replaced. Quote
paul.h Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 Oil leaks are common on that engine, the rubber oil seal in the head gasket can perish but usually the oil will leak out of the left hand end of the gasket as you look at the engine from in front of the car. You should fit another thermostat though since without one the cabin will not heat up much and the engine will always be cold leading to poor fuel economy and engine running. You might be able to just replace the thermostat but it usually comes as part of the plastic housing since these may not last forever. Possibilities to check for the coolant boiling:- the expansion tank cap is not tight so when the coolant heats up it is boiling out of the tank. The engine should not be run without the cap on the tank, otherwise the coolant will boil out. If the cap is faulty or its rubber seal is faulty, a new cap from a Citroen dealer is only about £3.- the engine fan is not coming on so when the engine gets too hot the coolant is not being cooled. It should switch on at 96°C on the first speed and the second speed if the temperature goes higher. It switches off at 94°C. Check the temperatures with a code reader with live data.- the coolant temperature sensor (there are 2 on the 1.4 petrol) is faulty so it is giving a low value so the engine fan is not being switched on. Use a code reader with live data to see if the value seems about right.- the air was not bled out of the coolant when it was filled - the 1.4 petrol is difficult to fill with coolant. When the engine was started could you hear any bubbles going round in the cabin heater ? There are 2 air bleed points, one on the cabin heater hose and one on the thermostat housing part on the end on the cylinder head. Citroen use a funnel on the expansion tank to raise the coolant level so the air can be bled out and this is shown in the Haynes manual but you could try with the gearbox side of the car raised on the jack so that end of the cylinder head is highest, or use a vacuum pump such as a Mityvac to suck the air out of this bleed point.- the head gasket was not put on correctly or the bolts were not tightened correctly.- the cylinder head is warped.- the cylinder head is porous.- the engine block is not flat at the head joint or maybe the old gasket was not cleaned off the block or the head.- the cylinder liners are not sealing properly.- the radiator is blocked so the coolant is not being cooled.- the coolant pump impeller has come off the spindle. shebeen Posted March 14, 2016 Author Posted March 14, 2016 Ps we also put on a new thermostat and have checked the water pump and all good Quote

shebeen Posted March 14, 2016 Author Posted March 14, 2016 The wee rubber ring on the bottle cap is broke i and the water is leaking out when it starts to bubble up, when its bubbling with the bottle cap on and i unscrew the bleeding screew at the engine water comes out and then a load of air and this will stop and start so maybe it could be the lid at this point.mm Quote
paul.h Posted March 14, 2016 Posted March 14, 2016 If the rubber O ring on the cap is broken it will not maintain the pressure in the cooling system and will let the coolant boil - so this could be your problem. I would not run the engine until you fit a new cap since every time it boils you risk warping the cylinder head since steam does not remove heat as well as water. If there is air still in the system this will similarly risk warping the cylinder head. I would not open a bleed screw on a hot engine, you risk getting scolded, far better to do it on a cold engine and with it switched off. Quote
