I have a C3 2009 1.6 HDi Exclusive

Recently bought had full service with my usual garage and told reversing light don't work

They informed me there are 2 types of reversing light switch a short version And a long version

When the long version was inserted it jammed the gear lever so they took that one out and put back the original short one

They say they don't know what gearbox this is I then took it to a gearbox specialist and was told a part must be missing inside the gearbox £400 to put it right I haven't bothered to check the type of gearbox as there only appears to be just the 2 types of. Switch

Question

can I put a switch on the dash and rewire from inside the car to the reversing light wires

Many thanks in advance

Is your car the 2002 to 2009 or 2009 on model ?

Best thing is to look at the Citroen parts diagrams to get the part no. against your car VIN and then buy the correct one - or get it from a Citroen dealer. You can see the parts diagrams as a free service if you register as other professional non emergency services on service.citroen. Then use your VIN (VIS) top left to find your car. If you look under Characteristics it will also give you the details of your car. http://service.citroen.com/pages/index.jsp

Hi Paul

Thanks for getting back to me

Have tried getting on to the Citroen site

But the computer says No. Will try again

If all else fails I'll wire thru a illuminated switch in the cockpit

Thanks

Your post says you took a short one out (as reversing lights wernt working) and tried a long one in that jammed the gears.  Why dont you put a new short one in and the gears wont jam and your reversing light should work with a new switch if the old one was broken

Hi Coastline

When I pushed the switch the reversing light worked with both switches long and short

But Not in the box itself

Thanks For Your Feedback

I Have since been to a gearbox specialist who tried the long one I bought And then put a new short one Without success

I'll get my son to hard wire thru a illuminated switch ( he's the one with the C & G in auto electrics I was trying to do it myself that's all

MANY THANKS

Maybe you could take the switch out, put the gears in neutral and see what depth is in the gearbox hole to the bit that works the switch. Then put it in reverse and check again - if the gearbox is working right this dimension should be a bit less than before. Maybe there is some wear in the gearbox but by using the long switch packed out with washers you could get the required length so it will work. Probably a lot quicker than installing a hand switch.
