rich5315 Posted April 24, 2017 Posted April 24, 2017 Hi I have posted before C8 2005 120,000 2.2 HDI, i have a clutch problem, the clutch pedal will not press down its jammed, i was told it would be the slave cylinder as it pushed the end out and would need replacing, Its in the garage at the mo, they have replaced the part but the same thing is still happening, they are now looking at replacing the whole clutch which i have agreed to. What i would like to know is they are telling me the duel mass flywheel (£240) will also need replacing as its something thats always replaced when the clutch is replaced is this correct? the car runs perfect when driven from started in gear, no vibration or anything so i have told them not to replace the flywheel is this a good idea? any replies would be welcome :-) Quote
Rookie2 Posted April 24, 2017 Posted April 24, 2017 Hi Buddy. The DMF is NOT always replaced when the clutch is done. The only reason they are saying that is that if they do the clutch and not the DMF and the DMF then subsequently develops a fault within 12 months, you would be taking it back stating it should have been changed at the same time as the clutch. The changing of the DMF is dependent on the miles it has done and the amount of rotational free play. I recently did a VW one and it had a ,maximum rotational freee movement of 19mm. Not sure what it might be on C8.It's easy to check, simply turn the DMF anti clockwise until you feel a resistance, but a mark on the DMF and the flywheel at the same point, then turn the DMF clockwise and put another mark on the flywheel when you feel resistance. The distance between the first and second mark on the flywheel is the amount of free play it has, the questions is, "What should the maximum be" ? cheers Quote
rich5315 Posted April 24, 2017 Author Posted April 24, 2017 Cheers for that, i dont get any vibration or difficulty changing gear, its something on the clutch that pushes the pin out in the master cylinder still doing it even after a new one, so the garage told me the clutch would need replacing and as the DMF is attached to the clutch it really need replacing too, there going to strip it and let me know on the condition of the DMF wheel Quote
paul.h Posted April 24, 2017 Posted April 24, 2017 I do not know what the cost is to replace just the clutch, but say if it is around £300-400. If the dmf is not replaced but then needs doing a bit later, it will also need a new clutch again and the same labour charge. A colleague had a VW Polo clutch replaced by the VW dealer but then 6000 miles later it needed doing again since the dmf had worn too much so this time the dmf also was replaced and the job had to be paid for twice. I do not know but possibly your clutch / dmf have done 120k miles. Quote
Rookie2 Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 (edited) Yes they can be expensive, far better to rip the darn thing off alltogether and fit a normal flywheel and clutch, cheaper than buying a dmaf and clutch, less problematic and the car drives just as well if not better. every time I have to do one of my clutches, the DMF goes into the bin and a normal clutch is fitted. DMF was a great idea for heavy trucks with high horse power to take away the "Snatch" when pulling a heavy load, on normal passenger cars they are not needed, the shame is that if your vehicle is under warranty, your warranty is void if the DMF is removed. paul.h Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 Just a thought, at 120k miles it is possible the clutch has been replaced before and maybe the dmf has been replaced with a solid flywheel. If so, the next clutch will need to be matched to the flywheel rather that the standard one to fit the car with a dmf. Should be interesting to see what the garage finds once the gear box is removed.
