Relayman Posted May 7, 2017 Posted May 7, 2017 I have a 1996 Citroen Relay with a 1.9 Diesel engine. No turbo. Is it possible to change this to a petrol engine Then to make it run on LPG ? If so what engines could I consider for a pain free conversion ? Quote
Rookie2 Posted May 7, 2017 Posted May 7, 2017 I dont think you will get a Pain Free conversion, you will also have to change the gearbox as I believe the ratio's will be far too low for a petrol engine.I am not sure how involved the ECU was on 1997 models, wouldn't think they were overly complicated, I would be looking at something like a Pug 306 or similar. You may have to also get the ECU from the donor vehicle and get someone to initialise it. (or maybe not) The exhaust would be different as would the fuel lines from the tank, you would need any electrical controls from the donor car such as MAF/MAP sensor and hope that the relay carries the same equipment otherwise you would also need the wiring loom.Just a few things to think about, hopefully it wont be that complicated but expect the worst with Pug/Cit and you wont get surprised cheers Quote
Routemaster1 Posted May 8, 2017 Posted May 8, 2017 Surely you mean that the ratios in a diesel gearbox will be too high for a petrol engine. Quote
Relayman Posted May 8, 2017 Author Posted May 8, 2017 Thanks for your imput.I will hang on and see if anybody else has any experience with this.I'm sure I'm not the first person to consider it. Quote
paul.h Posted May 8, 2017 Posted May 8, 2017 A lpg conversion could be around £2000 on top of the petrol engine conversion. If your idea is to lower fuel costs then I would think to recover this by using lpg you will need to do many 10000s of miles. A search on relay van lpg conversion came up with this old advert for a van for sale which says £1800 lpg conversion https://www.gumtree.com/p/vans/citroen-relay-gas-conversion-petrol-2-l-/1164898582 If you really want a van running on lpg then it might be cheaper to try and buy one already converted. Relayman Posted May 10, 2017 Author Posted May 10, 2017 Thankyou for your input. It has been most helpful in my decision making. Its good to look at other ways of doing things. But I think this one is not practible.Back to the drawing board for me. Quote
Rookie2 Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Far better to arrive at that decision now buddy, rather than after a few hundred quids worth of expense and nothing to show for it.Cheers Quote
