Car won't start after clutch change

Earth straps are often bolted to the gear box and the other end to the bodywork and the connections need to be clean metal.

Ignore the engine management light for now, this does not go out until the engine is running and it has had the chance to make sure all the various sensors are working/giving correct values.

If you have a volt meter check with the positive lead on the battery and the negative lead against the gear box, this should show if the gear box earth strap is connected by showing battery voltage. When you turn the ignition switch to start the engine can you hear the solenoid on the starter clicking - if faint it suggests a flat battery and this can be checked using a volt meter on the battery, should be about 12.7 volts if fully charged but anything less than about 12.5 volts and it needs charging.

I would also have a look in the handbook to see if there is a fuse related to engine starting that might have failed.

A quick check to see if the starter works is to take a wire direct from the battery positive to the starter solenoid and by-passing the ignition switch/electrics. A quick touch is all that is needed to see if the starter turns. Make sure the car is in neutral/hand brake on when doing this. This can also help if the car has become stuck in ECO mode but the ignition needs to be left on whilst trying this so the engine starts and runs. Also check the car still recognises the key by putting it in the ignition and then opening the driver's door - if it is recognised then there will be a beep to let you know the key is still in the ignition. If the car does not beep then the bsi has lost the key code and needs to be recoded to the bsi.

Hi

The battery is charged the gearbox is earthed. When the ignition is switched on the engine management light is on but all of the other display lights are off. When an obd reader is connected the rest of the light's come on. I have tried to connect a wire to the starter on both terminals but it does not turn over, before the clutch change the starter was fine. There is no beep when the key is in the ignition and the door is opened, this is a base model car so I don't know if the security features are the same. I bought this with the clutch problem, so have not had it long and don't know if the beep happened before.

If the starter does not turn over when connected direct to the battery then it must have a fault, possibly the carbon brushes are worn out. You might need to remove it from the car again.

The beep should still happen if the key is left in the ignition and a door is opened since the car will have an immobiliser - it shows the key is being recognised by the immobiliser. If it did not beep then it is not being recognised but usually an immobiliser does not stop an engine turning over on the starter, just stops fuel being injected so the engine will not run. You could also try the spare key.
