Guest JeffersanhisC5 Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 <_< Hi everyone, new to site and only stumbled across it by accident but it has been v.useful so i thought i would register. I bought a 2001 2.0SX Hdi on the Y plate off ebay for £2k with 74k on the clock and full history. I am a community nurse so have had it a year and done a further 12k. very pleased with it and only expense other than routine has been front and rear discs and pads replaced costing £282. It has a few minor niggles nut this site has shown me what to do (passenger window coming down when wipers come on, front brake squeal and steering wheel vibration at 65-70mph). What i wish 2 know is do i have problems with electrics-occassionally (about 3 times) they flicker for about a second and come back on (once at night were momentarily all lights went off), when they come back on the servicr light is lit. Also get a ticking from the fusebox and the passenger airbag fault warning comes on now and again. Also does anyone know were i can get the plastic stud things that hold the plastic covers on top of engine and battery as each has only one and it rattles when idling. Cheers Quote
Ronin Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 Welcome to the forums.I'll try and answer your questions ok.first of all the vibration..... Try getting your wheels re-balanced at a local tyre and exhaust centre, but avoid the big firms like kwikfit etc. (about £5.00 per wheel) it should cure the problem.Brake squeal is quite normal if the mechanic who worked on the brakes did not use any copperslip on the rear face of the pads and didnt remove enough corrosion from the calipers. It can be annoying but won't affect the braking efficiency. If it was done recently, ask them to look at it again. The chances are is that they will do exactly just that to prevent the squeal and you returning. Widows coming down when wipers work! Hmm, that's a tricky one but I would look in your owners manual for the proceedure on how to turn off the automatic rain sensor/ wiper facilty. It sounds as if this has gone faulty, so turning it off should help resolve the issue. If it doesn't then it's a trip to the auto electricians I'm afraid. The flicker of the electrics sounds like either a battery terminal is loose or dirty, judging by what you have said about the battery cover being loose, remember even if you don't here it rattling at higher engine sppeds doesn't mean it's not bouncing about.... This could be knocking the terminal connector. Or the other possibility... Sounds like an earthing problem that can be easily resolved by locating where the negative battery lead connects to the body work. Remove, sand down the contacts and body area from any corrosion and re-fit. The ticking from the fuse box can be a result of the above as the relay boxes will switch on and off momentarily with lack of power. The airbag warning will also be a result of the momentary power loss. I would favour that is possibly the reasons why you are having these electrical niggles and I would try both options as a preventative measure. Clips can be bought as a bag full from your local citroen parts department and aren't that expensive. Hope it helps. let us know how you get on please as it helps other owners with similar problems to find solutions easier. Quote
Guest JeffersanhisC5 Posted May 25, 2008 Posted May 25, 2008 Thanks for the info m8, i trawled the site and got fixes for the window problem (common apparently) and i will certainly see to brakes and check the battery and negative earth connections to solve the electrical niggle. Next year i will be in a position to change and will upgrade to a 53 or 04 plate 2.0Hdi (assuming one does not need to remortgage to buy a gallon of the stuff). the other alternative is leasing a brand new c5 off the nhs (you get less in your back pocket at the end of the month with smaller mileage allowance and more tax but your not shelling out for road tax, insurance or servicing). Any thoughts on old v new c5 from anyone, incidentally i have yet to see one on the road only in the showroom. Quote

Your more than welcome m8, that's what we are here for.My work mate has just bought a new C5 1.6 HDi and he is loving it. I can't believe the poke that little diesel has. Thank God that citroen have made the ride quality perfect...AGAIN. It handles well too with the latest version of the h3+ suspension. He had a 407 before and he says this is miles better.Only thing I found a problem with was the smell lol. I don't like the new car smell that citroens have at the moment. Quote

Guest Blackadder Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Thanks will give them a try :( I to am new to this site, one further thig to remember I have found that if the car is run into economy mode remote control for the stereo will stop working and the the switch to flick from time to temp readeing also failsthis means that a possible reset is required! the simple way to do this is disconnect one of the battery terminals and leave diconnected for aleast a minute and reconnect, you will have to retune your stereo and reset your clock, but a minor irritation for the greater good, this has worked for me in the past on my 2001 2.0 hdi lx :) plaese see my comment on dashboard problems and heed my warning with regards to dealing with a citreon franchies, it can prove costly  Quote
paul.h Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Blackadder, you may have a problem here. Citroens go into economy mode after the engine is switched off if something electrical is still on such as an internal light or the radio or a door is open. The power is automatically turned off after 15 to 30 minutes to stop the battery going flat. Simply starting the engine resets this, you should not have to do anything with the battery. Quote
