Guest alan44 Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Hi got a problem with my clutch pedal on my picasso (54 plate 20hdi), every thing is great in the morning but after 3-4 hrs driving app 50-60 miles, the pedal feels a bit notchy and there is a squeaking noise comming from the gearbox end. (car is used as a taxi) Sounds like a dry joint. Sorry for posting here cant get valideted on the picasso form thanks again Alan Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Most likely the release bearing has failed. This means a gearbox off/replacement job. No other way. Sorry! Quote
Guest alan44 Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Thanks for reply the car has only done 27000 mls. As I have said in the morning the clutch feels ok, however after some time of it being run the clutch pedal starts to feel notchy and squeaks only when operating the clutch pedal, is this symtomatic of this problem? The car still has a few weeks warrenty. Thanks again Alan Quote

Guest Colin Hunter Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Hi Again. Sorry it's take a wee while to get back to you. Yes what you describe sounds very like the release bearing has dried up. It's OK to begin with as the remaining lubricant will run back over the mating faces when the vehicle is stationary, and will be thrown to the outside by the rotational forces as soon as the engine reaches operating temperature. This will make it feel dry and "notchy" and will be the source of the squeaking. If the car has done 270,000 on the original clutch it's done well considering the amount of gear change operations it must have gone through in that time. Cheers Hope this helps. :) Quote
Guest alan44 Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Thanks Colin i have taken the car back to the dealer today . Its booked in tuesday for a gearbox out under warrenty, cars done 27000 only had it 3 weeks (unlucky or what). Still it be repaired foc will let you know what happens cheers Alan Quote
Guest alan44 Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Hi Paul thanks for the information, I have tried to log on using different e-mail addresses and user names etc. and still cannot get validated. Thanks Alan Quote
Guest alan44 Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Just got the car back from the dealer release bearing at fault. Full clutch replaced, also replaced a front wheel bearing and all done foc thanks alan Quote
Guest Colin Hunter Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Just noticed I'd mis read the posting! I thought you'd written 270,000! I thought the clutch was doing well and was wondering how a 270,000 miler was still under warranty! Glad it's all better now! Cheers! :( Quote
reginab Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 270000 miles? Impressive. How long have you had that car? It's gotten a lot of mileage. What shape is it in? _____________________________________________Autopartswarehouse.com rocks! Quote
Guest alan44 Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 Hi sorry for delay been on holiday, car has only done 27,000 mls but would be long racking mls up its a taxi. I have noticed that the release bearing still sounds noisy ie quiet on dipping clutch pedal, but a bit more noise when released (when idling) is this normal Quote
paul.h Posted July 26, 2008 Posted July 26, 2008 I have had a few cars where the clutch release bearing has been a bit noisy with the pedal up but then goes when pushed down and not had to do anything about it. Just lightly pushing the pedal until the bearing is just touching the clutch cover has stopped the noise - any different to this and it could be play in the gearbox (too much end float in the input shaft ?). One thought, maybe the bearing is not sliding easily back on its mounting tube when the pedal is released so is always touching the clutch cover and rotating - I had a Saab 900 like this that was very noisy but fortunately the clutch and bearing could be replaced without removing the gearbox. It may also help if the clutch fluid is changed so the slave cylinder is working with clean fluid. However, since the clutch has just been replaced I would go back to the garage and see what they say. Quote
Guest alan44 Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 Hi just back from dealer they reckon that the noise acceptable, but if it deteriorates I have to take the car back for reassessment . Clutch is under warranty for a year so Ill see how it goes .Thanks again Alan Quote
techbod Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 the Picasso has a known fault where its spot welded to the floor/bulk head when it fails it makes the peddle sway so making the transition of gear change difficult ( spot welds break off ) im sure it was a recall but being an old fart things get lost  Quote
Guest alan44 Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Thanks techbod the clutch pedal is ok and gear change good, unfortunately the squeak has returned after about 30-40 mls. Quote
techbod Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 does it squeak only when you press the clutch peddle? if yes then you need to get some spray grease what the bikers use for the chains and it lasts longer than wd40 Quote
Guest alan44 Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 HI again the squeak is coming from the gearbox end, and because its a hydraulic clutch there is not anything to be greased at that end thanks Alan Quote
