ColinC1 Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Well, 12.5k miles since new (19 months old), and am quite shocked how much tread is off the front wheels compaired to the back. Still road legal though. I have owned quite a number of small radius wheeled cars in the past, but this is very fast wearing, considering I do not break heavy, speed, or go round corners fast. The wear is even on both front tyres, so no problems regarding suspension geometry or tracking, it is just genuine road wear. I assume it must be quite a soft rubber. So this weekend I intend to move the tyres from front to back, on each side of the car and get a bit more life out the the worn tyres. This means using the spare wheel to move front to back. Oh, the Joys of motoring on a budget. Quote
techbod Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 nothing to do with the tyres its more down to the center of gravity because its a small car like the mini the tyres wear more quick than a bigger car because of its manouveritbly Quote
downsman Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 So this weekend I intend to move the tyres from front to back, on each side of the car and get a bit more life out the the worn tyres. This means using the spare wheel to move front to back. If you do that, you'll need 4 tyres at once  My theory, is to let the fronts wear out, the put the replacements on the rear, so you can wear out the rears (now fronts) and do the same next time. This way you only replace 2 at a time, and the rears don't get too old to grip well :) Quote

I know I should get another years motoring out the front set, if I leave it as it is , but 12.5k miles + say another 8k is still pretty poor for a tyres lifespan. Usually I get at least 40k miles per tyre on previous cars. I will give it some thought now. How is everyones elses front tyres doing ? Quote
TurboSlag Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 you got the worst possible combination - a revvy engine, and a hig sidewall (deformation when cornering) both of which munch tyres. Anyone getting 15k miles from a set of fronts is doing very well. they tyres are crap anyway, and very noisy. Dunlop sP sports are better and cheaper, but probably wont last any longer. Do not rotate the worn tyres on to the back - understeer will simply pith you off, unexpected oversteer could kill you. It's a cheapskates method, and is detimental to safety - it doesn't even save you money, cos it'll simply mean you need to buy 4 at once instead of 2. If they're tired, replace them. Quote
Johndouglas Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 How is everyones elses front tyres doing ? My C5 estate's are doing awful. It's just on 40000 from new and the second set are just about worn out. When I got news ones I had the tracking checked and it was OK. Previous Xantias and BX have done much better. The Xantia's fronts replaced at 35000. Quote
ColinC1 Posted July 20, 2008 Author Posted July 20, 2008 Possible Oversteer....... Argh ! OK, I am going to leave them as they are, Thanks all. Just for future nformation, what price are new tyres for the C1 ? Quote

TurboSlag Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Possible Oversteer....... Argh ! OK, I am going to leave them as they are, Thanks all. Just for future nformation, what price are new tyres for the C1 ?About £40 for a good boot, if you shop around. Quote
techbod Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 if you do tracing like I do with my ( ---- ) then what do you expect Quote
Martin_1973_uk Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 I must be doing well then as I'm still on 5mm after 12.5K and I thought that was bad. Is it the make of tyres as these energy efficent tyres do seem noisy etc. Quote
TurboSlag Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 They have a stiff ring moulded into the rubber around the circumference and thats what makes the noise. Quote
justjim Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 nothing to do with the tyres its more down to the center of gravity because its a small car like the mini the tyres wear more quick than a bigger car because of its manouveritblyI am running a c1 Vibe as a driving school car in fact I have done 32,000 miles since it was new in feburay I have just replaced these tyres which were mitchlen what make of tyre is fitted as I reckon mitch to be one of the best. Trotsky Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Possible Oversteer....... Argh ! OK, I am going to leave them as they are, Thanks all. Just for future nformation, what price are new tyres for the C1 ? Locally, @ £55 like for like. With 24,300 miles, the front tyres still have a few thou. of life left so may as well use the same if they last this long. Quote
citroeneddie Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 My daughters C1 has just had the fronts replaced at 16.5k after second year service. Might be due to her style of driving but interesting points from earlier in the thread. Quote
fathead82 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Was I just reading £55 a tyre!! I used to pay that for tyres on my 2L Vectra! I went to my local Pug dealer, and they had basic tyres for £20 each. Quote
Martin_1973_uk Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Front tyre wear has a lot to do with how hard you push the car. I'm on 18K and about half way through the life of the tyres. These cars need to be looked after otherwise they'll suffer in later life. 3 cylinders are not built for strain. On the plus side my car has not had anything wrong with it and has been very good. I read the article in Evo magazine and it gave a good balanced view of the C1. Considering it is a lot cheaper than a Fiat 500 or Ford Fiesta it shows how good a cheap car it is. Whether the price remains that low with the current economic climate remains to be seen. Quote
ColinC1 Posted December 29, 2008 Author Posted December 29, 2008 They will likely go cheaper, as they cannot give cars away at the moment :( And as for the 2009 facelift, well how could they make it look so ugly with such a gapping mouth of a hole, at the front. I was considering getting another C1 when my 3rd year is up, but it will have to be the 107 or Aygo now, as I hate that facelift. As long as its a reliable city bug  Quote
wozza Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 £55 a tyre  I wish mine were only £55. Got a quote to replace mine and put the Michelin Pilot Exaltos back on...£168 a corner! Admittedly that is a 225/40/18 sized tyre. But nearly £700 for 4 tyres :( Quote
jw191 Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 I replaced the front tyres as about 14k. Then replaced all four at about 28k. At 28k there was probably a couple of thousand left in the rears but I do over 2k a month and two trips to get tyres fitted just wasn't worth it. I paid about £170 for a full set of Michelin Energy's (same that were supplied with the car) at Costco. Quote
Martin_1973_uk Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 This could be why some people are getting in the 40 MPGs. I'm on 20K and my front tyre's are still only half way through there life and that is with some hard cornering. Some users must be really driving their cars hard on here? Quote
